Sarah closed her eyes and played her guitar while singing “Landslide,” letting all the tears fall down her face.

Holding the end of each line a little longer.

Letting every pause be a moment of reflection.

And when the crowd returned an applause that shook the whole venue, she opened her eyes, lower lip quivering as she fought for a shred of composure.

My dad touched my arm. When I glanced back, he handed me a clean, white hanky. I grinned, then I climbed onto the stage, took her guitar, and handed her the hanky.

She laughed through her tears while blotting her eyes. With my free hand, I laced my fingers with hers and led her off the stage.

One of the crew members took the guitar from me, and I faced her, seeing the pain in her eyes as raw as it was ten years earlier. I knew what she was thinking: I don’t deserve to be here.

And as I did every year on the anniversary of the accident, I pressed my hands to her face and brushed my lips against hers while whispering, “But I’m really fucking glad you are.”
