Kaye steps on the side of the stage, checking everything over, ensuring it’s oh-so-perfect. Last week, one spotlight was off by an inch, and I swear her eye started twitching like the world was about to implode.

I lean in and whisper so that only Kaye hears. “How are you doing there, Frosty?”

Kaye jumps almost a foot. “Jesus.” She grabs her chest. “Don’t sneak up on people like that. You nearly gave me a heart attack.”

I chuckle. “Baby, don’t worry. When I make your heart stop, it’s going to be from the mind-blowing orgasms I force on you.”

Kaye raises a perfectly shaped eyebrow but doesn’t say a word. Is she trying to freeze me out with silence? “Can’t blame you for staying silent, Frosty. You’re probably saving those vocal cords on the off chance that I fuck your brains out again.”

“You fuckin’ wish,” Kaye spits.

I step closer and push her into a dark corner backstage, where no one can see us. “Baby, I don’t need to wish because I know.” I grip her hips and thrust myself against her. “Bet if I slip my fingers down your little wool pants, they’ll come out glistening.”

“Let go of me, Piper,” Kaye huffs.

“I will, once you admit you’re soaked for me.”

Good. I’ve stunned her into complete silence. Kaye knows the truth as well as I do. That’s why she has no quick comebacks or adamant denials.

“What’s going on?” an incessantly obnoxious voice asks behind me.

Sonya.

Kaye laughs. “Yeah, Piper, why don’t you tell your little girlfriend what’s going on?”

“I don’t have a girlfriend. I have a fuck buddy,” I say, ignoring Sonya.

Some days, I think I’m no better than a man. But then again, I am a feminist. I’ve fucked someone for shits and giggles many times. Sex doesn’t have to mean an earth-shattering connection. To be blunt, I like girls who fuck and duck. It’s much more fun to have someone else’s hand get you off instead of your own. If Sonya wants to fuck rock stars who don’t have an affinity for her, that’s her business, not mine. I don’t own her, and she doesn’t own me. The two of us have an understanding, and it suits us fine for the time being.

Sonya tugs at my sleeve. “I’m hungry.”

I dig in my back pocket and pull out my black leather wallet, lifting a fifty-dollar bill and throwing it at her. “Go grab yourself a pizza.”

“You’re not coming with me?”

Jesus. This girl might be daft. Here I am with another woman, barely paying Sonya attention, and she’s still trying to shoot her shot.

“Nah,” I say, my eyes locked on Kaye, “Pizza isn’t the meal I have in mind.”

I lose my balance as Kaye shoves at me. “Hey Sonya, why don’t you wait up? I am done here and would love some pizza.”

A normal person would be mad watching the girl of their dreams saunter off with their supposed side piece, but all I do is laugh.

CHAPTER 9

Kaye

Slurping is so disgusting. I’ve been listening to Sonya slurp her slushy for the last five minutes. I want to tell her to give it a rest. She won’t find a pot of gold or a rockstar at the bottom of the paper cup.

“So,” she asks, “what’s up with Striker? I tried talking to him, but he didn’t seem interested. I thought it was me, but he walked by all the girls, even the two guys there.”

I lean in, and she mirrors my movement, bringing her head closer to mine, hoping I’m about to divulge some hidden secret. “He’s probably tried.”

Sonya huffs like a spoiled child whose mother has given her a stern no. “He’s so handsome.”

“How can you tell? He wears a mask.”

Sonya smiles wistfully as her eyes dart to the window. “You can tell, you know? I mean, have you seen his fingers move on that guitar? A girl can’t help wondering what those fingers could do to her.”

I grit my teeth, annoyed at how she’s nonchalantly discussing fucking one of my best friends while she’s fucking Piper. An image of her in bed with Piper flashes into my mind, and my irritation spikes to downright anger. “Aren’t you with Piper?”

“Not really,” Sonya whispers. Her eyes widen, and she stares at me in fear. “Oh, my god. You can’t let her know I told you. That was the deal. I could stay on the tour as long as I pretended to be into her.” Sonya taps her chin before groaning and dropping her head into her hands. “She’s gonna kick me off the tour.”

“Why would she do that?”

Sonya lifts her head slightly. “She’s still Piper Pain. I’d gladly fuck her, but she only seems to want to fuck you.”

My throat goes dry. “What? How do you know?”

“The person she wanted me to lay it on thick for is you.”
