“I can almost see your mind drifting, baby,” Abby says, sitting up beside me with a teasing smile. “Into muddy waters. We’ll get to that soon enough.”
Abby leans forward and brings out a men’s shoe box. She places it on my lap, grinning from ear to ear.
“You got me a new pair of shoes?” I ask with a soft smile. “Thanks, baby. But that could have waited until....”
“Open it,” Abby says eagerly.
I can almost feel the vibrations of her excitement. I shake my head in amusement and slowly lift the lid on the box. I’m surprised to find a pair of cute little white booties in the box. I take out the shoes, and beneath is a pregnancy test that says positive.
My heart soars as the message dawns on me.
I look at my wife’s face, and she’s smiling brightly. Now, I understand the brilliance that’s been shining in the depths of her eyes all evening. “Are you...you’re pregnant?”
“Yes, I am,” Abby says, nodding her head excitedly. “We’re expecting a baby!”
I throw my arms around my wife and pull her into a tight embrace. It’s a long time before I pull back, looking deeply into her eyes.
“Thank you, Abby. You make me unbelievably happy. You helped me make sense of my existence and have filled it with beautiful colors ever since. Every day I’m grateful to the universe that brought you to me. I love you so much, baby, and now you’ve given me something else to love. Our first child. Thank you.”
“You make me happy too,” Abby says softly. “And I love you. Now and forever.”
Abby snuggles into my arms, placing my palm over her flat stomach. “Do you think it’s a boy,” she asks, smiling up at me. “I’ve always wanted a baby boy.”
“If it’s a boy, I hope he has your eyes and my hair,” I say, leaning over to kiss her forehead. “If it’s a girl, I hope she gets your shiny brown hair and beautiful green eyes. Regardless of the gender, we’ll love our baby unconditionally and with all our hearts.”
“You’re right, honey,” Abby says with a silent chuckle. “Let’s talk baby names. What do you think of Albert? Chase? I like the sound of Dylan, but....”
I laugh heartily at her antics and swiftly lower myself against her. “I think I just want to make love to my wife right now,” I whisper in her ear, running my tongue lightly over her ear lobe.
A light shiver wracks through Abby’s body.
“Carlos!” she cries with a high-pitched laugh when my hand suddenly sneaks beneath her dress. “We need to...”
I slip a finger inside her at the same time as I seal my mouth over hers, swallowing her deep moan of pleasure.
It’s going to be a long, happy night...
SIX YEARS LATER
Abby
My chest swells with pride and a familiar feeling of joy as I watch my husband and our son tossing a ball in the large yard.
I can’t believe it’s been six years already, but Chase is enough evidence.
He looks so much like his dad, with his curly black hair and gangly tall frame. He’s quite tall for a five year old. The only thing he inherited from me is my eyes.
Not that I’m complaining.
Our son is the most beautiful boy I’ve ever seen.
My gaze slides to my husband. I feel heat pull between my legs as my eyes slide slowly over his skin, glistening with sweat, and the powerful flex of his muscles as he throws the ball to Chase.
I can’t believe I want him again so quickly when I was screaming hoarsely in the throes of a powerful orgasm just an hour before. It’s always been like that, though... Carlos has always made me burn with passion. Six years and I still can’t get enough of him.
I hear the twins crying. “Nap time is over,” I say with a sigh to my sister.
Natalie and Alicia mirror me in their looks. Alicia is the more boisterous one and is advancing faster than any one year old I have ever seen. Her babbling is becoming understandable as words now, and within no time she’ll be talking away.
Her sister, Natalie, is not as independent. She is a daddy’s girl, so her arms go up for a cuddle whenever she sees her father. Of course, Carlos obliges her every whim.
Chase also loves his little sisters. He is always trying to make them laugh. He loves to have tickle fests with both of them to see who can laugh the longest and the loudest.
The days have passed too quickly, morphing into years. But every second with Carlos has been special. Our passion still burns brightly, and our love has only grown with time.
“Doesn’t it feel just like yesterday when you called me panicking about having to treat Carlos?”
I turn toward Beth with a small smile. She was also looking at Carlos and Chase, a fond smile playing on her lips. “I can’t believe it’s been so long,” I reply, shaking my head slowly.
