“You sure that’s safe, Chief?” Boyd’s eyes were wide. “I hear tell he’s got a cursed wolf!”

“Yeah, well his wolf doesn’t bother me none,” McCain snapped. “Now just do as I say—the minute he starts to change, you strap her to the breeding bench.” He nodded at me. “And push her out in the clearing. He’ll forget all about me the minute his beast scents her Heat.”

Breeding bench? Was that what the curved wooden table thing with the leather cuffs was called? But McCain was still talking.

“Be sure you record everything,” he told Boyd. This fucker thinks he can infiltrate our town and send the Council evidence of us breaking one of the Unbreakable Laws? Well let’s see how he likes it when we get him on tape breaking both of them at once!”

“It’s not really tape, Chief—it’s digital,” Bobby Aiken said, sounding muffled, since his nose was swollen to the size of a tomato. “See, I got it on my phone—”

“Shut the fuck up, boy!” McCain snarled. “I know what it is—I’m just saying you got to record every little bit so we can use it against him if that fucker tries to report us!”

“Oh, right.” Bobby nodded, looking chastened.

“All right—here I go,” McCain muttered to him and Boyd. “Strap her down and be ready!”

“Mmmph!” I exclaimed, trying to protest through my gag. I couldn’t let them do this to Nick—they were setting him up! “Mmmmph!”

McCain gave me that nasty yellow grin of his again.

“Don’t worry, sweet thing—you’re gonna get your Breeding Fever taken care of in just a little bit. You’re gonna have your pussy stuffed so full of your big brother’s cock you’ll be pregnant in no time!”

Then he stepped out into the clearing and shouted at Nick,

“All right—I claim the girl as mine by rights of the conquering Alpha. What are you gonna do about it?”

Nick straightened up.

“I claim Kira by the virtue of the brand we both wear.”

“Oh yeah? You willing to fight for her?” McCain demanded, swaggering forward.

Nick’s eyes flashed.

“I’ll fight you, all right, you son of a bitch. You killed my father—both our fathers.” He nodded at me and then narrowed his eyes at McCain. “We’ve got a debt to settle.”

“All right then, boy.” McCain grinned at him. “Let’s settle it.”

TWENTY-SEVEN

I wanted to warn Nick it was a trap but there was nothing I could do. My hands were cuffed behind me and my mouth was still gagged.

“Mmmph!” I tried to yell, shaking my head at Nick as he faced off against Chief McCain. They had freed his wrists and both men were shirtless now. The moonlight poured down on them like liquid silver from above as they circled around each other, both looking for a good opening.

“Don’t worry, darlin’,” Nick called to me, never taking his eyes off the older Alpha. “I’ll make him sorry he ever came to Wolverton!”

“You sure about that, boy?” McCain called mockingly.

And then he began to change.

I gasped as I saw the fur began to flow over him and his joints started bending differently. He burst out of his uniform trousers and his knees went backwards and his hands and feet turned into paws. His ears moved up to the top of his head and his face became long and pointed, just as it had the other night.

Before I knew it, the giant, horse-sized wolf was standing in the middle of the clearing, snapping at Nick.

There had been no contest when they were both human—Nick was bigger, younger, and obviously stronger. But even as big as he was, I knew he couldn’t successfully fight the enormous wolf in his human form. He was going to have to Shift.

But I didn’t want to think about what would happen if he did.

“God damn it!” I heard him growl as the enormous wolf started circling him. “McCain, you fucking coward! You don’t think you can take me in human form so you decided to Shift to Fur Form?”

“Mmmph! Mmmph!” I tried to shout, shaking my head at him. If only I could have the damn gag out of my mouth I would have been shouting, “Don’t shift!” But of course, I couldn’t say a word, gagged as I was.

The noise I was making seemed to make Deputy Boyd and Bobby Aiken remember I was there. They had been holding me by the arms but just standing there, staring as McCain Shifted. Now they got to work.

“Come on, girly, we gotta strap you to the breeding bench.” Deputy Boyd gave me a sneering grin. “Don’t worry—you’re gonna love it. We keep it on hand for the bitches like you who don’t want to submit like they ought to!”

“Yeah—nothing like strapping a rebellious bitch to the bench and knotting her,” Bobby chortled. “Once they get a big belly, it shuts ‘em up good and proper.”
