The one thing she could say for Dmitry—he knew good quality furniture. His sofas, chairs, and even beds were like a dream.

She tucked her feet up underneath her and stared across at Sofia.

After the drama of last night with Dmitry, Alix had gone back to her room. She took a shower, and then curled up in bed. She only had to wait thirty minutes before Sofia came to her, having had a nightmare. Seeing as she was a little heartbroken herself and felt a little tender, almost raw, she had hugged Sofia tight, feeling the tears in her eyes.

She didn’t say anything, nor this morning had she sought out Dmitry. Last night had ended in disaster for her. Alix could only do so much to find the answers he refused to give. Why did it matter so much?

He was a scary person. Even that night at the party, which seemed like a lifetime ago, she’d known he’d been a person to fear. Only, she hadn’t feared him. There had to be something completely messed up with her mind to not be afraid of this man. He’d killed people.

She didn’t need the guards or even a confession from Dmitry himself to know what he was capable of. George had told her how important he was, how people were afraid of him because if anyone was to ever cross a man like that, they would end up paying with their life.

Again, she hadn’t cared what George had said. He’d been trying to get her to sleep with him, to make their marriage real. She denied him. Refused to give in to his demands, and of course, it had made him hate her even more. She hadn’t been attracted to George. She hadn’t even liked him. Again, that part of her she thought had died long ago, had only awakened for one other man—Dmitry. He was only her second lover in all her thirty years. Alix didn’t like random hookups with people. She didn’t like to go on dates or have awkward meetings with men. Shaking her head, she leaned her head back against the sofa. She had to get Dmitry out of her mind.

The door to the sitting room slid open, and it was like her own thoughts had conjured him up, because he stood right there in front of her. Not directly in front of her, but at the door. He didn’t look happy. His gaze moved to Sofia then to her.

“She’s asleep,” Alix said quietly.

Dmitry held his hands up and gave a finger call action for her to go to him. Part of her wanted to tell him to fuck off, but that part of her never, ever cursed aloud. Thank you, parents. She got to her feet and moved to where he stood. There was a guard on the other side of the door.

“He’ll take care of Sofia. I need to talk to you.”

“Can he come in the room? Sofia doesn’t like it when she wakes up somewhere new,” she said, determined not to leave the little girl unattended.

“This is her home. She knows where she lives.”

“It’s the sitting room and she fell asleep with me being in the room,” Alix said. “Please.”

She wasn’t saying this to be awkward or to not follow Dmitry. She was being serious. Sofia came first. Always.

Dmitry glared at her but then nodded at the guard who immediately put away his weapon. No one was allowed to show their guns with Sofia around. It was one of the rules Alix thought was cute. To her, it also showed how much Dmitry did care about his child.

Alix didn’t know the full history of his ex-wife. Again, his men liked to gossip so she had the rumor version and there were two different versions of that one. She wasn’t going to believe either.

Following Dmitry out of the room, he surprised her by taking her directly to his office once again. Was he going to talk to her about what she was in his life? Had he come to a decision?

Dmitry got to the edge of his desk, spun around, and folded his arms across his chest. The glare on his face wasn’t exactly inviting. He looked mightily pissed and she couldn’t think of why he would look that way. Dmitry had no reason to be angry at anyone.

“Where’s George?” Dmitry asked.

Okay, as openings, it wasn’t what she expected.

Chapter Five

Benjamin couldn’t find George. Angeloff was also missing. And Dmitry was pissed off.

The only person who could know anything stood right in front of him and just staring at her was irritating him. He should have known she was like everyone else. His men had already searched her room, but they hadn’t found any cell phone or laptop. He’d gotten another of his men to check the security cameras and even the computers to see if she’d been able to find some form of contact with the outside world. When it came to Alix, there had been nothing.
