I hang up. I’m still hard as fuck, but this can’t wait.
Which is going to give me a painful set of blue balls.
“What’s wrong?” Bianca asks.
“Business.”
I feel her stiffen. “Is it about Harrison?”
When I don’t answer her, she presses me.
“Massimo, does it have something to do with Harrison? Have you found him?”
“Maybe. We have an address. But it’s not confirmed he’s there.”
I move to my desk and remove a gun from the top drawer. I carry two on me at all times. But when you’re walking into an unknown situation, you can never have too much protection. Bianca’s eyes track me as I secure a third piece behind my back.
“Then we have to go there. We have to get my money back.”
“We aren’t going anywhere. You’re staying here while I pursue this lead.”
“You’re delusional if you think I’m not coming with you. If Harrison is there, I want to see him face-to-face.”
I’m good at picking my battles to win a war. Fighting Bianca will only hold me up.
Whether I like it or not, she’s coming with me.
“Fine, but you stay in the fucking car.”
It takes us thirty minutes because of roadworks in the city, so by the time we get there, Bianca is chewing her nails and bouncing her knee. Her quest to find Harrison might be over, and an anxious storm is brewing inside her.
“Wait here,” I say, pulling up behind Matteo.
“No way,” she cries, unlocking her seat belt.
“Listen to me. I don’t know what we’re walking into, and if bullets start flying, it’s going to be hard to protect you. Let me go in first and see what the situation is. Once it’s safe, I’ll send Matteo out to get you.”
“I can take care of myself.”
“I don’t doubt you can. But we have to do this my way, Bianca, or I’m driving you back to Lair.”
Her eyes flare but she finally concedes. She folds her arms and gives me a murderous look. “Fine.”
I climb out. I have half a mind to lock her in. But a locked door wouldn’t stop her. If she really wanted out of the car, she would blow a hole in the window with the cute little Beretta she carries in her handbag.
I walk over to Matteo where he’s standing beside two De Kysa soldiers. He’s already figured out a way inside and is waiting for me to give the go-ahead.
“For someone who rips off rich people, he’s not overly concerned with security.” He nods toward the gate blocking the driveway which is easily scalable. “We’ve already detected the home security system is off.”
Having a tech wizard in our pocket is always useful.
“Who does the house belong to, do we know?” I ask.
“Some overseas oil magnate who rents it out. My guess Harrison is hiding out here until things die down.”
I shake my head. We’ve been scouring the globe and he’s been here the whole time.
“Have you seen any sign of him?” I ask.
“No, nothing.”
I take in the tall brownstone with the bay windows and prominent front door. Something isn’t right.
“You ready for the guys to go in?” Matteo asks.
I give the signal with a nod, and Matteo sends them in. Watching them, I draw in a deep breath through my nose and feel the venom spin through my veins. These are the moments you know you’re really alive. When the thrill of the chase is about to end, and you know you’re about to win.
Letting out the breath, I stride across the road and follow my men inside the home of Harrison Tork.
It’s completely dark, and there is no sign of life.
The house is still, eerily still, and when we get to the second floor master bedroom, it becomes wildly apparent why.
Harrison Tork is zip-tied to a chair, his wrists and ankles bound in place, completely naked with a gaping hole in his neck from a gunshot wound. His head is slumped forward, and his eyes stare lifelessly at the floor.
“Well, that’s disappointing,” Matteo says.
I crouch in front of Harrison and study his wound. He hasn’t been dead long.
“He’s naked,” Dante says. “Lovers disagreement?”
I look at the zip ties. “No, someone wanted something from him and then they shot him.”
“You thinking of anyone in particular?” Matteo asks.
“The neck wound. It has Bamcorda written all over it.” I rise to my feet. “Tony Vinocelli, the consigliere to Luca Bamcorda, he has a son, Fausto, did a lot of the dirty work for Luca. It’s his signature. He liked to aim for the jugular.”
“You think Tony Vinocelli is behind this?” Dante asks. “Why would he want Harrison dead?”
“Revenge for stealing from Bianca?” Matteo asks.
“No, they didn’t do this for Bianca. They turned their backs on her like scared little mice. No, they did this for the money.”
A sudden commotion downstairs tells me Bianca didn’t stay in the car.
