When I pulled back, I took his hand and rubbed his load into my skin. Kai sucked in a sharp breath like the action surprised him, but he let me do it before I gently turned us so we were lying down, with him on top of me.
“We’re gonna get cum and sweat on your couch.”
“I don’t give a shit. I’ll clean it. What’s wrong? Just tell me.” I was on my back, his stomach and chest against mine. I held his ass, then dipped my fingers lower so I could play with his puffy, swollen hole that was slick with my cum.
“Ugh. I’m an idiot, and I don’t want to tell you. It’s embarrassing.” He buried his face in my neck, and I frowned. It was embarrassing? Maybe this wasn’t what I thought it would be.
“You’ve met my friends. You have nothing to worry about.” Kai chuckled the way I’d hoped he would but then stiffened. He tried to get up, but I held him down. “If you really want to get free, all you have to do is ask, but if you don’t use the words, I’m taking that as permission to hold you where I want you to be.”
He rolled his eyes. “Of course you have to go and be fair.” He sighed. “I’m not going to Atlanta. It was…fuck, it was probably never going to happen, and I’m the flaky idiot who trusts everyone and just believed what Archer said.”
This time it was my turn to stiffen. I swatted his ass. “Don’t talk about my boyfriend that way.”
“Why are you the sweetest man in the world?”
I looked away from him. “I’m not. Fuck Archer. Whatever happened, that’s on him, not you. It’s not your fault he lied or misled you or whatever it was.”
“But you asked me about contracts, and I didn’t push for them. I just listened to everything he said and rearranged my whole fucking life around it. What if Declan has already replaced me?”
“He won’t. If you want your job back, it’s yours.”
Kai shook his head. “You can’t make Declan keep me. How would that be fair to the other person? He’s already been interviewing. And…that’s the thing. You can’t fix everything for me. I know it comes from the heart, but this whole situation proves I’m a mess and need to learn how to make better decisions.”
This time when Kai tried to sit up, I let him.
“How am I supposed to tell my family I fucked up? They’re going to feel sorry for me and again want me to move home. My other choice is to keep living here with you when I don’t even know if I have a job and—”
“Is that so bad?”
“Yes!” Kai shouted, then sighed. “Shit. Not the way that sounded. I love being here with you, Marcus. I just… I don’t have anything to offer you. I can’t give you the things you can give me and…what? You’re going to help support me for the rest of my life? Take me to meet your parents, your bartender boyfriend who everyone thinks is a little too much?”
“Fuck everyone.” Didn’t he see that I didn’t think he was too much? That it had taken Kai to make me want to belong to someone else? “And you.”
He crossed his arms. “Fuck me?”
“You said you don’t have anything to offer me. You, Kai. What makes you think I need someone who can buy me shit? Or who has what you seem to think of as a more worthy career than bartending? I don’t give a damn about that stuff.”
“Because you have things! What happens if you resent me?”
I sighed. “That’s possible in any relationship. It’s not what people want to think about, but it’s real. A large percentage of relationships fail. People resent each other. People fight. I don’t know the first thing about being someone’s boyfriend, but I’m here, Kai. You’re the one running. You’re the one using the kind of excuses I usually would. I grew up in a house where people could buy me shit and give me everything I wanted in that way. That’s not what I’m looking for in a relationship. You have nothing to prove to me.”
The expression on his face turned contemplative, his brows pulled together as he looked at me. I’d basically spilled my guts to him in a way I never had with anyone else, and it was killing me not to get up and walk away, to pretend it didn’t matter and that I didn’t care about him because it was so much fucking safer that way. But the truth was, I wanted him, and I wasn’t sure there was anything I wouldn’t do to have him.
“Oh…that makes sense. I never thought about it that way. I just want to be good for you.”
