And suddenly I’m the king of freaking adjectives.

She batted her eyelashes. “Just one drink?”

I nodded. “Sure. Just one.”

Famous last words…

CHAPTER 2

Owen

My head was up my ass this week.

For the first time in my career, I’d brought someone to the wrong damn property. I’d also lost an account to a competitor. And I’d been late to meet clients numerous times. I had not gotten to be one of the top luxury realtors in the City operating this way; that was for damn sure.

But I knew exactly what was wrong. For the past few days, I’d been fixated on one of the best and worst nights of my life—the night I’d met the mesmerizing, bohemian woman with the auburn hair. Also, the night she…ghosted me. There’s a first time for everything, right?

How could I have let her go like that? But what was I supposed to do, run after her? That’s not who I am. Owen Dawson doesn’t chase women. Women chase me, and most of the time, I have no interest in them. But it’d been three days since my encounter in that hotel room with Devyn, and I hadn’t been able to stop thinking about her. It was ironic that after months—scratch that, years—of not being able to feel a damn thing for anyone, the first person to ignite anything inside of me had decided to take off like a bat out of hell immediately after.

None of it made sense. Devyn and I had engaged in stimulating conversation, had shared many laughs, and by the time we left the bar together, I was certain it was the beginning of something potentially epic. We’d gone to the nearest hotel, just a couple of doors down, because it hadn’t seemed like we could wait long enough to pick a place any farther away. That’s how damn combustible our chemistry had been. And what happened once we got behind those closed doors could only be described as euphoria.

Yet now all I had was her first name and the memory of her taste, smell, and how good it had felt to be buried deep inside her.

I’d had one-night stands before, but never one where I’d wished I could slow time to make sure I didn’t miss a single moment. That’s exactly how I’d felt with her—even before we’d had sex. That’s the thing: it wasn’t just the sex. It was everything. And I’d wanted more than just one night. Not once had I considered that she’d run off without giving me her number. Devyn was like Cinderella, except she didn’t leave behind a damn shoe—or a clue. Not a single thing besides her first name.

“I’m sorry.”

That’s all she said before she left me in that hotel room—speechless, with my dick still hard.

Sorry for what? It was the best damn sex of my life, and even if I never saw her again, I was still glad it happened. I wouldn’t have traded it. So there was certainly nothing to be sorry about. That night had gotten me out of a very long funk. I’d thought I was broken because nothing, certainly not any woman, had stimulated me in what felt like forever.

Maybe someday I would share the story with the guys, but I needed to get over it first. Although, I was certain at least one of them would know by looking at me that something was off.

My three best friends and I owned the forty-unit apartment building we all inhabited in New York City. Colby was the oldest of the bunch. And he’d been the biggest playboy of all of us for several years, until he finally met the love of his life, Billie. Holden was a drummer in a band and had been quite the womanizer himself, until he settled down with our friend Ryan’s sister, Lala. Brayden was the one in our crew I was probably closest to, and he and I were the only single ones left. All of us were constantly up in each other’s business. We were more like brothers and typically told each other everything. Seriously, if one of us farted, the others would know about it from across the building.

But if they knew about this, they’d surely bust my balls. Not sure if they could berate me any worse than I was berating myself right now, though.

A knock at my apartment door interrupted my thoughts.

I opened.

Brayden strolled in, smelling like his favorite Polo cologne. “We’re all heading over to the hospital to see the new baby. You comin’?”

Holden and Lala had just had their first child. The fifth member of our posse, Ryan—Lala’s older brother—had passed away from leukemia when we were in our early twenties. We’d used the inheritance he left us to purchase this building. He wasn’t here physically anymore, but his spirit had never left us.
