“Listen well, wife, you churn my insides, twist at my heart, never leave my thoughts, and arouse my manhood with a simple look. I try to make sense of it, but I can’t, and I can’t stop what I feel. We have not known each other for long, but I feel I have known you forever. So, aye, I care for you more than I should, more than makes sense, more than I thought myself possible of caring. But there is the warrior within me that tells me to fight it, to stay free, to not bind myself forever to a woman, to a clan.”

“And who is winning?” Elsie asked softly.

“Bloody hell,” he said frustrated. “You are.”

He held her neck firm as his lips came down on hers in a possessive kiss.

CHAPTER 13

Elsie had wondered, along with her sisters, what a kiss would feel like. They would giggle when debating over it, sometimes cringe at the thought and other times sigh with how wonderful it might be. Never had their debates come close to imagining just how amazing a kiss could be or that kisses got even better along the way, or the way kisses stirred the senses. Or how much better they were when you discovered just how much your husband cares about you.

She had enjoyed every kiss she had shared with her husband, but this kiss—this kiss—was special. It was filled with how much he cared for her more than he should, and she swore she could feel the difference.

His lips demanded but then so did hers and it was a demand both answered, lingering in it and sparking their passion that had been restrained since their first time together. Now, though, it was ready to be set free, to explore and enjoy as they did that one night.

“Bloody hell!” Cavell said in a labored breath when he abruptly ended the kiss.

He stepped away from her, leaving her puzzled and a bit dazed.

He stepped close to her once again and grabbed her hand to shove beneath his plaid. “This is what you do to me with a kiss, just a kiss, not even an intimate touch. You turn me rock hard with a kiss.”

Elsie gasped, her hand brushing his swollen shaft and she did not hesitate to wrap her hand around it or say what she felt. “I love the feel of you.”

“Damn,” he muttered, bringing his brow to rest on hers while warning himself not to do anything foolish until he was sure of… what? What was it he was looking for from his wife or was he looking for something from himself? He did know one thing he was sure of… he wanted his wife’s hand to continue stroking his shaft.

“I love the feel of your shaft, but I love it even more when you slip inside me and make me feel the most marvelous sensations.”

“Is that an invitation, wife?”

“You do not need an invitation, husband, I am here whenever you want me.”

He raised his head to look into her soft blue eyes. “That hungry for me, are you?”

Elsie heard the lilt of teasing in his voice, but the simmering look in his eyes told a different tale and as her hand continued to stroke him, she whispered, “Always.”

Do not do this. Not yet, a voice in his head warned.

He could almost hear his throbbing shaft protest. Nay! Nay! Nay! Do not walk away!

Elsie saw not only hesitation in his eyes but doubt as well and something sparked in her though it wasn’t passion. She released his shaft and walked away from him. “Your shaft says one thing and your eyes tell me another. You hesitate and there is doubt in your eyes. You are unsure. The next time we couple, if we should ever again, it will be because we both are sure how we feel and we care enough to be intimate, care enough to remain in this marriage.”

Cavell went to her, keeping his hands at his sides, though he itched to touch her. “Are you forbidding me from touching you intimately?”

“From touching me at all,” she corrected. “It will do no good for us to become too familiar with each other. As I told you, I have already come to care deeply for you, and I worry about the pain your leaving might cause me if I grow to care even more for you. I suffer enough with the temporary loss of my sisters. I do not want to endure the pain of a permanent loss of someone I hold dear.”

“You, wife, do not dictate what I can and cannot do. If I wish to hold your hand, touch your arm, kiss you, then I will.”

“Aye, I cannot stop you, but I cannot be forced to reach for your hand or rest my hand on your arm or return your kiss.”
