“What are you doing?” I ask, patting at my lips with my napkin. “Why are you on the floor?”
Ed chuckles, his blue eyes sparkling.
“Susie, you never fail to surprise,” he says. “But can’t you tell, seeing that I’m on one knee at your side, holding a jewelry box in my hand?”
Realization strikes, and I jolt in my chair.
“Oh my God, Ed!” I blurt out.
He grins before his gaze turns sincere. “Susan Grace Pelham, our relationship began as a wonderful accident when you arrived on my doorstep as a homeless waif. Never in my wildest dreams did I think this would happen, but life is full of surprises. After all, there’s nothing I would change about our time together and I adore you, from tip to toe. Will you marry me, sweetheart? Will you make me the happiest man on Earth?”
“Yes, of course!” I squeal with glee, throwing my arms around his neck. “Oh, Ed, I had no idea you were planning this.”
“That’s the idea,” he says, chuckling. “Although I have to say, you were really wrapped up in the pasta.”
Then, Ed slides the ring onto my finger, and we both smile as the small diamond shimmers.
“Thank you, it’s perfect,” I breathe with tears in my eyes. “I love it.”
With that, our lips meet in a passionate kiss because this is the man for me. I never thought I’d end up marrying my mom’s high school boyfriend, but isn’t that the wonderful thing about life? It throws you curveballs, and sometimes, those curveballs are exactly what you need. In this case, I have my man, my baby, and also a home filled with love.
