I placed a few of the busted links on top of the box, locking the past away. I wondered if anyone would ever learn the truth about what my father had done or what happened to him. Family would learn of his death, as it would cause my mother's death as well. But they may never find his body. I would never tell them, or reach out to any other relatives. It could be unsafe for Skyler, and nothing was worth putting him in jeopardy. Leaving my father's death a mystery gave me sick satisfaction.
I jumped out of the grave and Skyler wrapped me in a tight embrace. “I'm so proud of you,” his voice sounded in my mind.
He released me to climb back into the excavator to replace the dirt on top of my father's grave. Everything had gone full circle. I was free, and my life truly began in a cemetery.
Skyler parked the machine where he found it and returned to my side. “Dammit, we forgot to cut his dick off,” he said with a snap of his fingers.
“Would you like me to dig him back up?” I offered seriously. I would do anything to make him happy.
“Nah, I'm just teasing. There is something I need to do, though,” he replied before unzipping his pants and urinating on the mounded dirt. “Much better.” He then held up both of his middle fingers towards the ground. I was aware of the crude meaning of this practice, and my mate smiled when I copied his actions. “Ready to go home?” he asked, offering his hand.
I laced our fingers together as I shook my head. “I'm ready to go buy some cakes.”
“Have I mentioned I love you?”
“I love you too.”
I squeezed his hand and we walked together toward the exit, leaving everything unpleasant where it belonged; buried behind me. My thoughts were set on the future and occupied with sweets, birthdays, and love for my mate.
