VIPER

Ipicked up my water bottle and poured half down my throat before setting it next to a stack of towels on the front seat of my truck. After grabbing one and wiping the sweat from my forehead and chest, I tossed it back in the cab and shut the door.

It was early October, but we were having some kind of heat wave. Tennessee weather was always mild, but fall was usually the most comfortable temperature for a job that required working mostly outside. So the unusual heat and humidity had us shedding shirts—the male employees, anyway—and guzzling water.

“Viper!” my foreman shouted, calling me by the moniker I’d used since I joined the Iron Rogues MC right after college.

Chris was several feet away and scowling fiercely at a clipboard as he leaned against another truck with the name and logo of my landscaping company. I’d graduated from college with degrees in landscape architecture and horticulture, but after a few years cooped up in an office, I’d decided to open my own company and spent as much time as I could working on the site with my crews.

I’d taken Chris with me when I left the last company, which had been a smart fucking move. As the Tail Gunner for the Iron Rogues, I had responsibilities that often included taking me out of town. Chris was the perfect person to be in charge of everything when I was unavailable.

However, he didn’t have as much patience as I did when it came to dealing with problem clients. Then again, he’d probably never spent hours doling out small amounts of pain in order to get vital information—handling difficult customers was easy in comparison.

The Iron Rogues had a reputation for being dangerous and merciless with anyone who tried to fuck with us. We operated under our own system of justice, which was often considered outside the law. But we owned enough of the local government to make sure they looked the other way when we took action.

It was easier to buy them when they knew we didn’t tolerate drugs or abuse on our turf. We often helped victims find a new life. If we got wind of a trafficking ring, it didn’t matter whose turf they were on—we shut that shit down with a fucking vengeance.

We were real fucking good at making people disappear.

Chris was a tough motherfucker, but he wasn’t cut out for a brotherhood like mine.

“What’s got your panties in a twist?” I muttered as I ambled over to him.

“Did you see the changes Grant asked for?” He shoved the offending clipboard at me and ran his hands through his hair while growling expletives.

I skimmed the paperwork and quickly discovered why Chris was in a foul mood.

“Fucking hell,” I sighed. Porter Grant was the owner of the largest bank in the suburban area that surrounded my small town of Old Bridge. He was also a grade A asshole, but he’d hired us to design and build the grounds around the mansion he’d recently bought.

Honestly, I was starting to wonder if the job was worth his bullshit. He kept changing the plan, and some of them set us back weeks. Don’t get me wrong, he paid for the extra time and resources, which was the only reason I allowed it, but he was reaching the limit of my patience.

“Does he know how fucking rare Juliet roses are?” Chris seethed.

I handed him back the clipboard. “Relax, man. I’ll get him to accept one of the more accessible alternatives. You know Harvey will get it for us.”

Harvey was the father of a newly patched member of my MC. He was also the owner of In Bloom Garden Center and Florist, the best nursery around. The man could get his hands on just about anything I asked for…and at a reasonable price.

“Did you see the amount, Viper? He wants almost every inch of the flower beds surrounding the house. Not to mention that we had already planted half of the beds with the gardenias we had flown in from Italy. The fucking pallets of gardenias!” He emphasized the last part because gardenias could only be bought by the pallet, which was one of the reasons they were so expensive.

I shrugged. “His money.”

“From now on, I’m going to add an asshole fee to any jobs we take,” he muttered.

I barked a laugh and shook my head. “I’m gonna have Harvey send over enough for one section. Show it to Grant before we order the rest. I have a feeling he won’t even know the difference as long as the color and shape are similar enough.”

Chris lifted his chin in acknowledgment, then stomped off.

I called Harvey and filled him in on the situation. Luckily for us, he happened to work with a supplier two towns over that stocked those flowers whenever they could get their hands on the seeds.
