“He got loose.” Vaden cuts down the conversation before it can get far. They know not to ask questions.

Aire shrugs, changing the subject. “So where were the girls even going?”

I freeze. My eyes fly to Priest and Vaden. That was something we hadn’t even asked ourselves amongst all the drama… and blood.

Aire continues, not picking up on the shift in atmosphere. I’ve had to stop Priest from killing him multiple times through the years because he’s so fucking stupid. I’m not stopping him anymore.

“I’d heard of them making appearances in as far as NYC.”

“You heard and didn’t think to tell us about this?” In fact, I might just kill him myself. Unfortunately, I can’t just switch off to not giving a fuck so quickly like Priest can. I always react with emotion, usually aggression. Not that Priest isn’t unhinged, because he is, and usually I’m the logical one when it comes to what counts, but not when it comes to the girls.

We’ve been watching over them all their lives. That shit doesn’t switch off automatically, at least not for me. Vaden? Eh. He’s a cold motherfucker anyway. Priest? Not enough involvement with the EKC for him to care. If Halen is getting in the way of anything to do with the club, he’ll scratch her out. Blood or not, the Elite Kings Club and keeping the engine steamed is all this fucker cares about really—outside of Halen.

“We haven’t been catching up as much—” Aire bites, but not enough to piss me right off. He’s smart. He knows I’d fucking lay him out.

I lean back against my chair, flicking the Zippo between my fingers. “They won’t be doing that anymore, since they were so careless with telling us. It means they have a new place to act a fool.”

There’s a knock on the door and Samson throws the joint on my lap as it opens.

Bishop and my old man stand on the threshold, casting a quick glance around the room. I pluck the half-smoked blunt from my lap, glaring at little bitch Samson before placing it between my lips. I squint around the veil of smoke as my pap’s eyes land on me.

Drawing in a long hit, I flash him a smirk as I blow smoke rings. “Sup, Daddy.”

"Shithead.”

I pucker my lips in a kiss, kicking my leg up to rest on the edge of the bed. “What can we help you elders with?”

“Yeah?” My dad mirrors my smirk, his eyes darkening. “Why don’t you ask your mommy if I fuck like an elder?”

I flip him off.

Priest leans against the poker table, shoving his hands inside his pockets. He and Bishop are tight. Kind of like brothers, only somehow worse. I don’t think any of our dads really were dads. They all had to put the family first and then be a father second.

A King doesn’t need love. We just need loyalty.

“What is it and why do I think I’m not going to like this shit?”

“Because you’re not.” Bishop turns over his shoulder, checking Dad before coming back to me. “Meet in the Cave in an hour.” The Cave is where they conduct all their meetings. Going forward, pretty sure ours will be the Lighthouse.

“You’re calling a meet?” Vaden asks, leaning back on his elbow.

“Yeah. Bran will be there—” He pauses, looking around the room. The corner of his mouth twitches. “As will your sisters.”

“What?” I lean forward and dub out the blunt.

“Son…” Dad stares at me. Doesn’t help we’re already around the same height. “See you in an hour.”

I’m still glaring at the door after they leave when Priest taps my leg with his. “What the fuck is your problem with them coming in? You knew it was gonna happen. Makes sense it’s now since we’re so close to the ritual.”

“I don’t know. I thought when they were older.”

“They are older,” Vaden interrupts, flicking the army knife between his fingers. “Honestly, I thought it would be done before now.”

Priest disappears in the closet. “You know they needed time to figure shit out before they could.”

I shuffle on a shirt and a pair of Jordans, heading out of the room. “I’ll meet you down there.”

I slam the door closed and keep my eyes locked on Halen’s room. My fingers flex in my palm when I think back to the last conversation we had.

Who the fuck has she fucked and why the fuck does it bother me so damn much?

Halen

I stare blankly at my dad’s office door…

Noises bang around and the lump in my throat grows bigger the longer time goes on. What will he do? What will they do? Does he know? I am not sure. The house smells of freshly baked cookies and I take the steps away from the Cave so I won’t be tempted to force myself into his space and tell him all of the things that have been eating me up since, but I collide with a hard body.
