“You’re a stuck-up, chubby little bitch,” he snarls in my face.
I flinch, wanting to get as much space between us as possible and once again I try and pull my arm from his hold. Just when I think he’s not going to let me go his office door explodes and the glass shatters into a million pieces. His hand drops from my arm and we stare at Hank standing in the doorway.
I thought Jack looked pissed, but that was nothing compared to the rage in Hank.
Chapter Thirteen
Hank
I spent the time after I dropped Sugar off trying to be productive. But the more time we spent apart, the more desperate I became for her. I made calls and had plans arranged and occupied myself the best way I could, but I arrived early and I’m thankful for it.
My heavy shoes crunch on the glass as I stomp toward Jack. Sugar told me about the asshole at work who stole her ideas and kept blowing up her phone all weekend.
“You’re the weasel dick that can’t take a hint,” I say, clenching my fists.
“W-what?” he stammers as he takes a step back. “Gale, call security!”
His voice breaks as he shouts and it’s a giveaway at how scared he is.
“You think anyone is going to save your ass now that you’ve insulted my woman and dared to touch her?” I move closer to him and I’m ready to beat his face into soup when I feel delicate fingers touch my forearm.
“Hank,” she whispers softly and shakes her head. “He’s not worth it.”
I reach out and touch her chin so she looks me in the eyes. “But you are.”
Tears form in her eyes as I step away from her and lunge for Jack. As soon as my hands are on him, I grab him up and body slam him down on his desk. I’ve got my hand on his neck and I’m bashing his head against the cheap wood when I hear a crowd of people come in behind me.
“Oh shit,” I hear someone say and then Sugar calls my name.
I feel hands on me and then I’m being pulled back as Jack rolls over on his desk and coughs violently.
“You so much as look at her ever again and I’ll take your goddamn eyes out.”
Jack rolls off his desk and cowers behind it as security comes in and asks what’s going on.
Sugar rushes into my arms and the four men it took to get me off of Jack let me go. I hold her close and kiss the top of her head as I walk out of the office and pull out my phone.
There are people behind me shouting for me to come back and that the cops are on their way, but I’m going to handle this my way.
“I want you to sit in my car for a second while I handle this,” I say to Sugar, and she looks up at me with a worried expression. “Hey, none of that.” I rub my thumb across her cheek and give her a quick kiss as the other end of the phone picks up.
“Andrew, I need a favor.”
“You know you’re going to owe me,” my longtime friend the state governor says into the phone.
“The usual then?” He laughs as I help Sugar into the car and I hear the sirens in the distance.
“So what is it you need from me, brother?”
“You know the dealership off Route Four. The one that used to have that big hill in the back?”
“The one where you snapped the front tire off your old dirt bike?” He chuckles again.
“Yep that’s the one.”
“Sure I know the place. What’s up?”
“Shut it down.”
“You got it,” he says without hesitation or a single question as to why. “Give me fifteen minutes.”
“Better make it five. The cops just arrived.”
“Looks like you’re going to owe me twice,” he says, and I hear him call out to someone else in the room.
“You can have an invitation to my wedding.” Sugar’s eyes widen and I wink at her and close the door to the car.
“Okay, now I need the whole story.”
“Thanks, Andrew, and tell Sarah I said hello.”
“Will do. But next time call me when it’s not an emergency.”
“Nah.” I hang up to the sound of his laughter.
A moment later the parking lot is filled with cops and a fleet of government officials. I smile the whole time as the people are cleared out and they chain the door shut.
“Hank, what did you do?” Sugar asks when I get back into the car and we drive away from the dealership.
“Are you angry with me?” I reach over and take her hand in mine. She doesn’t pull away. “Did I scare you?” It wasn’t until after the adrenaline died down that I realized how I could have looked to her. I came in there with my fists swinging and shut down her job. “I understand that what just happened might not be normal boyfriend behavior, but I’m new at this.”
