“Code red!” Greyson shouts. “Anyone not alpha, you’re being secured.”

What’s going on?

“Orderly fashion!” Riley calls out. “Two lines. Line up in front of the door by Jase or Joel. Nobody trample anybody!”

Jase hadn’t gotten out yet and I see him and Joel forming lines in front of them.

I look at my buzzing phone as Riley rushes me toward a lineup. My screen is all pixelated; it’s pixelated and buzzing, and it seems like everyone else’s phones have gone wonky, too.

“Where is everyone going?” I ask.

“Basement,” Riley tells me.

“I can help. Me and my sisters and Aunt Mimi might be able to help with whatever this is.”

Riley nods but doesn’t look pleased. He pulls me toward the wall and I gesture at Aunt Mimi, Vivi, Ronnie, and Dani to come over.

“Jessie!” I gasp. She’s not here. Our phones are all going nuts and she’s the only person I know with the ability to do this.

She converts energy, too, but not from things that are growing and alive like I do. She taps into and uses energy from other realms and within this one - cellular lines, power lines, wind, and water. She wants us to know something is wrong. Somehow, I don’t know how, Greyson must know it because he called out Code Red.

“Jessie!” I say to Aunt Mimi and see a dire expression on her face. She already knows. She probably gave him the heads up when the phones went nuts.

“Where’s my wife?” Grey shouts. His nostrils flare.

“Bathroom!” I call out, but he’s already rushing toward the bathrooms at the opposite end of the space. I’m suddenly remembering Sherry Creed went that way just after Stacy. I hope she’s not put that girl through the ringer with her verbal venom.

Before Greyson is all the way there, there’s a man pushing his way out with Stacy’s throat in the crook of one arm, another arm around Sherry. There’s a knife pointed at Stacy’s neck. Behind him is the guy Cade from Roxy’s, looking infuriated. I guess he stopped him from leaving through that exit.

The guy with the knife moves with his back along the wall toward us. Both women are crying.

“What the fuck?” Grey demands in a guttural shout.

“I’m takin’ my sister and this woman!” the guy replies, and I realize he was the one talking on the phone when I walked the wrong way down that hall.

“If any of you try and stop me,” he warns, “the girl we took dies. And possibly this one.” He’s got the tip of a knife at his sister’s throat.

His own sister’s throat!

Greyson’s pupils blow and blood begins to stream down his cheeks from his eyes. His neck muscles are bulging.

Stacy’s brother looks thrown an instant later because the knife flies out of his hand and lodges into rafters above.

Okay, so it appears that Greyson has unlocked telekinesis, which is a gift he might have gotten from Aunt Mimi – I’m not sure. But I’d never seen Aunt Mimi use it, only know that’s how she got Lucinda’s wand into her belly.

“Not only do you need to let my wife go,” Grey snarls, “You need to send the woman you’ve nabbed back in here. Or… I end you.”

The guy immediately lets Stacy go. She runs to Greyson and he catches her in his arms.

“And my sister, fuckwad,” Jase shouts.

“No,” the guy replies. “Got here to get my sister and caught her scent. Turns out she’s mine.”

The room goes silent.

“What?” Sherry asks, aghast.

“Yeah.” The guy taps the side of his nose. “Who’da thunk it.”

“Let her go, then call whoever you need to call to get the woman you kidnapped back in here,” Grey demands.

“I need assurances I’m gonna be let go.”

“You’re not in a position to bargain, asshole,” Grey snaps, holding Stacy protectively. “It’s obvious you used a scent mask to get in here. What else have you pulled tonight?”

“Wouldn’t you all like to know?” The guy smiles in a way that can only be described as sleazy.

“Send her in or suffer,” Riley warns. “And let go of Sherry.”

The guy bares his teeth, lifts his phone out of his front pocket and stares at his screen. He’s still got ahold of Sherry, and she looks so horror-stricken I feel bad for her.

“My phone’s still fucked,” the guy says and then his eyes land on me and he looks confused.

“Wyatt, please let her go,” Stacy cries.

“Can’t,” he says. “Let me go, let me take her, and I’ll have my guys let the witch go. Fair trade. Who… who are you?” he asks me. “You’re not the witch that was at that cabin, are you? You a twin?”

“Why the fuck do you think we’d let you trade?” Jase snaps.

“Caught her scent on the way in here tonight. She’s gotta come with me. No ifs or buts about it. Unmated alpha here. This one’s my mate. But who the fuck are you? Are you the one who tried to set me on fire?” he asks me. “Who fried two of my betas? Thought I knew your scent, but it was covered by his claiming scent.” He gestures to Riley.
