“What are you thinking so hard about?” How could he know me so well after only one day together? After getting so good at hiding my true feelings behind a wall of fake smiles and happiness, I feel exposed in front of him, like an open book.

Maybe love does that; it rips away all pretense. It just goes to show how far apart Vance and I had been; he never knew until I told him what I truly felt, and that was only after I couldn’t hold the disgust in any longer without going out of my mind.

His arms that seemed to always be around me tightened and I looked up at his face from my place on his chest before quickly looking away again. It seems I can’t lie to his face. “Nothing, just thinking about the funeral tomorrow and all that I have to do in the coming days.”

He didn’t speak right away and I felt myself begin to grow tense.

“I’ll let you go to the funeral against my better judgment but I’ll have my men on you. They’ll bring you back here once it’s over.”

“Your men?” Does he know something?

“Yes, Kevin and his team will be with you from beginning to end. You didn’t think I was going to let you go there alone did you?” I didn’t know if to be pleased or afraid.

If he gets too involved it can only end badly I’m sure. The senator had already sent his pet snake to his door, what more will he do if Gavin persists in staying close to me? His arms tightened even more as if he could read my thoughts.

“Gavin, I’m not sure…”

“It’s not up for debate. Either they go or you stay. Unless you wanna tell me what it is that you’re afraid of.” I had to think of something fast to get his mind off that track. No way will I ever tell him that particular truth.

“Why were you going to marry her if you don’t love her?” I felt the movement as he lifted his head to look down at me, holding my breath with the hope that he didn’t see right through my ploy.

I only breathed easy again when he laid his head back down on the pillow and sighed heavily. “She was the safest bet!” Now I picked up my head and looked at him directly. “What does that mean?”

He tapped my back and rolled out of bed dragging me with him. “Let’s go get something to eat while we talk.” He pulled his shirt back on over my head and I felt his seed run out of me and wet my thighs.

My face flushed and I squeezed my legs together. Of course he didn’t miss a beat and that infectious grin of his almost had me spilling every secret I ever had.

“Let’s clean you up first.” We took a quick shower together after which he helped me into another one of his shirts, this one a button down dress shirt, while he pulled on jeans and a tee before taking my hand and leading me from the room.

“Do you know how to cook?” He headed for the fridge leaving me standing by the island as he foraged for something to make for lunch.

“I used to.” I stopped myself from saying too much and just left it at that and pretended not to see the look he sent me.

It was easy as breathing to walk over to the sink and start washing the vegetables he pulled from the fridge to make a salad and we spent the next couple of minutes in relative silence as I made a salad while he grilled some salmon steaks on the indoor grill.

It was only when we were sitting across from each other at the breakfast table in the little nook off the kitchen that he continued with what he was saying.

“You wanted to know about Amy. Now that I look back it was a stupid thing to do, but at the time it seemed like the only solution. You were already married so I knew I couldn’t have you. I figured I wasn’t getting any younger and so I tried to find a woman who was no threat to the love I feel for you. Do you understand?”

I took my time answering because I didn’t want to give a patented answer. He’d already said he’d broken things off with her, and I knew I was going to screw his life over again when I leave. So what exactly can I say?

I nodded my head anyway because I did understand, but I couldn’t bring myself to tell him that he may have been too hasty. That maybe in the end he’d end up marrying someone he didn’t love.

Then again after I pull my disappearing act maybe that love he feels now will die a quick death. My heart ached and bled at the thought. I was close to tears as I nibbled on the food that had lost its taste.
