I felt his eyes on me and knew that I had to be careful lest I give myself away. I was more torn now than before. When Vance was alive there was no way for us to be together, and even now that he’s gone things only seem to be worst. My heart wants to hold on, but in my mind I know that there’s no way. Things had gone too far for me to grab whatever happiness we might’ve found together.

Thankfully he misunderstood my silence as was evident by his next statement. “Even though I asked her to marry me, she knew I wasn’t in love with her. In my heart I never let you go. I don’t think I ever could.”

I looked over and caught the look in his eyes and shivered as my breath got trapped in my lungs. I’ve seen hunger in his eyes before but this was so much more. It was all consuming. Can I really walk away from that kind of love, that need?

“What was that?”

“Wha…what?” I breathed in deeply as I got to my feet and walked to the sink. He wasn’t far behind.

“That thing you just did, like you couldn’t breathe. What’s the matter with you? You feeling sick again?”

“It’s the way you looked at me. I can’t breathe when you look at me like that.” Crap, I didn’t mean to say it out loud like that. I felt my cheeks redden with embarrassment and hid my eyes from him before he saw too much.

Gavin

Whoa! Her honest confession did something strange to my insides. I don’t think she meant to give that much of herself away, but I’m glad that she did. It was the first time she’d come that close to putting her true feelings into words.

“At least you’re honest. Come here.” I held my hand out to her and she took a step towards me, both literally and metaphorically. I took her hand and pulled her into my arms, wrapping them safely around her.

“How is it now?” She buried her nose in my chest and wrapped her arms around me. I felt the move in my heart and gut as I wrapped her up tight. “It’s good!” She sniffed my chest and seemed to inhale my scent the same way I’d done with her countless times already.

We stood there not talking, not moving, just holding onto each other and I never knew until now that a hug could feel this good, or say so much without words.

When my body reacted once again to her nearness I pushed her head back and kissed her forehead. “Let’s go back to bed; I want you again.” I lifted her with her legs around my hips and my hands on her ass holding her in place as I walked from the room, retracing my steps back to the bedroom.

That sadness that had been in her eyes when she was trying to hide from me at the table was long gone when I laid her back across the bed and came down on top of her.

I wanted to see that breathless look again, wanted to feel that same power of a minute ago. There’s never been any doubt in my mind about what she felt, but seeing that shit went a long way to smoothing out any rough edges left behind from our fucked up situation.

I guess it’s only natural to want the woman you’re desperately in love with to love you like that in return. To want to steal her breath away the way she does mine. Now when I touched her my hands were more gentle.

When I took my shirt off of her my movements were carefully calculated as I took my time and savored every inch of her as it was revealed to my hungry eyes.

I was as hard as the first time I took her, harder even. Like I hadn’t already had her all those times we’d fucked since I brought her home with me. But more than the stiffness of my cock were the feelings that invaded my heart.

I’ve been on a rollercoaster ride since Kevin called me the night before, and this, this right here was the pinnacle. I knew there was still a lot that needed to be said, a lot she was still holding back, but none of that mattered.

“I love you.” I looked into her eyes when I gave her the words and she did that breathing shit again, like all the air had been sucked from her lungs. I pulled her up from the bed with a hand behind her head and covered her lips with mine; stealing what little air she had left.

I didn’t push her to give me back the words. Not because I didn’t need them, I realize now just how much I wanted to hear them from her sweet lips. But I wanted them to come when she was ready and not as just an automatic response.
