So I took a deep breath and with my eyes hidden behind the dark shades I’d remembered to order walked towards him and his wife. “Giselle, dear, where have you been? We’ve been trying to reach you.”

My mother in law and I have never really had much dealings with each other except for holidays when we had to pretend to be part of the perfect family. She’d found her own way of dealing with her life long before I came into the picture and it was usually at the bottom of a bottle. I could smell the faint hint of booze even now as she gripped my hand.

“I’m sorry, I was so distraught after the police questioning that I let a friend take me home and turned off everything. I should’ve thought of you but I figured since the senator knew where I was that he would’ve told you.” I didn’t even look at him when I said this.

“Who are these people? Are they friends of Vance? Hello.” She greeted Kevin and the driver who I had yet to meet. I could almost feel bad for her poor woman. Over thirty years with the senator could not have been easy. But she has her moments of evil too which makes it hard to feel anything but disdain.

I have to get away from them before I turn into her. When Vance was still alive he’d used fear and threats to keep me in line, but now that he’s gone I don’t have it in me to trade that life for one where the senator takes over from his son. At least I had enough sense to know that.

I hadn’t said a word to him but could feel his lecherous stare as we turned to enter the church that was already filled with people most of whom I’d never met I’m sure. It was all, just for show, just like everything else when it comes to this family.

“You and me need to have a very long talk when this is over. I suggest you lose them, you’re coming home with me.” I didn’t turn my head at his whispered threat but my knees almost buckled. I was too afraid to turn and look at Kevin, to see if he’d noticed anything.

The funeral should be well on the way by now. I hadn’t heard from Kevin since they arrived so I’m guessing all was well since he hadn’t called with any news. Still, I had that uneasy feeling in my gut and was barely paying attention to the meeting that had been the most important thing on my mind for half a year.

My phone rang halfway through the meeting and my guts dropped when I saw it was Kev calling. I’d been checking my screen off and on for the past half hour but not really expecting it to ring. I knew the service wasn’t over since these things tend to drag on when it involves high society fucknuts.

“What happened?”

“I sent the other team to her place. I figured everyone would be focused on the funeral so there would be no reporters there.”

“And?” I knew it had to be important for him to interrupt the meeting I was in the middle of, and I knew it could only be about her.

“You’re not gonna like this, I’m sending you the pics now, tell me what you think.”

“Excuse me, my assistant will take over from here.” I left the room and walked down the hall to my office from the conference room where the meeting was being held.

I was sitting behind my desk when the first image downloaded. I wasn’t sure what the hell I was supposed to be looking at until I saw the door with the million and one locks on the inside. I called Kev back right away. “What the fuck am I looking at?”

“From what I can tell, it was her room, they had separate rooms it looks like, but I don’t get a real warm feeling from the many locks and bolts she had on the door. What or who the fuck was she trying to keep out?”

“Get her out of there now.” My heart was in my lungs when I left the chair and headed for the door. I didn’t even look at the rest of photos that downloaded and barely spared the few minutes it took to duck back into the meeting. The shit was already mine anyway they don’t need me.

“Something came up I have to go. Everything’s already taken care of my assistant will show you out.” I shook hands with the CEO of the company I’d just bought and left without another word.

All that was on my mind were those five locks on the inside of that door. What did they mean? What hell had she been through in that house while I was just a few minutes away?
