Neither of them respond as Grayson pushes the Escalade to its limits, desperate to get some proper distance between us. We drive for a few minutes and when Grayson speeds through the entrance of a darkened tunnel and the automatic headlights come on, he turns them straight off, sending us into complete darkness.

My back straightens.

Something is happening.

“What’s going on?” I question, my eyes wide as Grayson drives on pure memory.

King’s arm curls around my waist and locks me in like a steel vice. He scoots to the side and presses the button for the window, letting it open wide and as he does, a loud, familiar rumble sounds through the car.

My gaze shoots out the open window, seeing one perfectly round headlight pull up beside us, keeping up with our pace. My jaw drops, watching Cruz Fucking Danforth on my goddamn Ducati, the same Ducati that up until a second ago, I thought was roadkill.

“Ready, babe?” King calls in my ear.

“Ready?” I question. “What the fuck for?”

“Your ride is here,” he tells me. “We’re getting you the fuck out of here and we’ll lose these motherfuckers so you can get away.”

“What? But—”

King grins, his hold on my waist tightening as he hoists me up, shoving my head out the fucking window. “Sorry, babe. Too fucking late now.”

My eyes widen in horror as my hair whips through the wind and despite my outbursts and objections, King keeps feeding me out through the window until my ass is seated on the edge of the Escalade, half my body in and the other half just moments from falling through the window and becoming a road sandwich.

Cruz moves the Ducati in nice and close, just one wrong move from either Grayson or Cruz and the whole thing is fucked. Cruz’s arm curls around my waist and as it does, King eases up on his hold and before I get a chance to tell either of them to go to hell, Cruz yanks me right out of the Escalade and places me down on his lap, straddling him and holding on for dear life, my arms locking around him as my hair comes back and whips me in my face.

King’s window goes straight back up and as I flip both King and Grayson off, Cruz takes off, speeding through the tunnel a million times faster than I ever went on this thing, leaving the boys and the tail in our dust.

Cruz passes through the tunnel and takes the very next exit off the highway, bringing the Ducati to a stop behind a sign that warns motorists about the dangers of drunk driving.

The engine rumbles below us and as Cruz looks down at the highway we just left, I pull myself off his lap and straddle the bike behind him, looking up just in time to see Carver’s Escalade flying down the road with the black SUV following behind, completely oblivious to the boys’ ridiculous little stunt.

Cruz lets out a deep breath and glances back at me. “Don’t pretend that I can’t smell them on you,” he tells me, shaking his head. “We had a deal.”

Ah, shit.

I cringe but before he allows me a chance to feed him some bullshit excuse for my bad behavior, he takes off, revving the engine and sending us sailing straight back to the highway, leading us in the opposite direction and taking us back to Ravenwood Heights.

CHAPTER 26

The Ducati rolls to a stop outside my gates to find Carver standing in front of a cop car, not letting the two officers before him enter my property. All three of them turn to look at me and Cruz as we climb off the Ducati and I can’t help but feel that there was some kind of showdown about to happen at my front gate.

“What’s this?” Cruz questions, taking my hand and holding me slightly behind him as we make our way over to Carver and the two officers.

The cop on the right looks slightly familiar and I try to think back to the day I was arrested at school on murder charges—charges that were miraculously dropped when the boys got themselves involved. This guy was one of the cops who humiliated me by marching me out of school in front of the whole student body, and while I didn’t realize that I was holding a grudge, seeing his face now makes it all too clear to me.

“Miss Ravenwood,” the cop says, taking a step toward me with his head held high and his arrogance held even higher. “We have witnesses who have placed you at a crime scene.”

My brows furrow as I step out from behind Cruz’s shoulder, not prepared to take the backseat on this one. The cops have been a problem for me for way too long and I’m not going to continue to shy away from them anymore, especially now that I plan on staying in Ravenwood Heights indefinitely. “What crime scene?” I ask them.
