Ember screams, her hand flying to her thigh and tearing the dagger out of its holster. She scrambles through to the back of the van and I shuffle back, my hands flying free as she comes for me.

“EMBER,” Paris screeches, struggling to focus on both the road and her daughter.

Ember hardly gets a fucking word out before I grab her wrist, holding the dagger away from me and yanking her closer. She screams again, though it sounds more like a strangled battle cry and before I give Paris a chance to bring the van to a stop, my elbow slams down over Ember’s temple and I knock the fucking bitch out cold.

The dagger clatters to the floor and I quickly scoop it up, only having a moment to make my move.

Paris slams on the brakes and the van screeches to a stop, but the momentum only has me flying at her faster. My chest hits the back of her seat with a hard thud and I ignore the pain as my hand twists around her, bringing the sharp blade to a stop at the base of her throat.

She scrambles for the phone in her lap, but I beat her to it, grinning back at her through the rearview mirror.

“Checkmate, bitch.”

“Do it,” she growls at me, her jaw clenching in the same way that Ember’s does when she’s backed into a corner.

I glance around, trying to figure out where the fuck to go from here.

There are too many people in the streets and they’re all gaping at the van that’s holding up the traffic. Horns are honking all around us, and if I wait too long, Ember will wake and my advantage will be fucked. So, with so many witnesses, killing Paris tonight is only going to cause me more trouble, and I can’t blow her the fuck up without hurting the people around us. I have no choice but to leave her here with her bomb strapped to her chest and hope that I can get far enough away before she has a chance to take it off and come for me.

Wanting this over and done with, I reach for the side, sliding door and tear it open, but not wanting to leave without making it hurt, I bring my hand up and slam it down hard against Paris’s shoulder, letting the blade sink low into her shoulder until I feel the dagger penetrating the seat behind her.

She screams in agony as blood begins pouring down her chest and the sound is like music to my ears. Hell, if I had my phone right now, I’d record it so I could show everybody when I finally get my ass back home. Fuck, I’d even make it my ringtone. What a fucking waste.

“I’ll see you in hell, you crazy bitch,” I tell her, going to move out of the van while grabbing my heels for the walk. I go to step out when I pause in the open door, scoffing at Ember sprawled out on the floor. I hold the phone up and watch as realization hits, knowing that her whole fucking life is in my hands and that the tables have officially turned. “I wonder if you can save yourselves before I blow it.”

And just like that, I slide my cum free heels back on and stride right out of the van as though I don’t have a care in the world.

The van takes off again and despite all the people standing around watching me, I walk free, holding my head high knowing that tonight, my people will all sleep safely in their beds without having to worry about grieving for loved ones.

Despite Paris walking free, and despite how wrong it felt to let her go, tonight was a win and that’s all that counts.

I lose myself within the crowded bodies, weaving and ducking past people as I try to figure out which direction will take me home. I haven’t had to come into the city much but honestly, I should know the streets a little better than this. Though, the opposite direction that Paris went is always a good way to go.

The loud honking of traffic sounds again, and I glance back over my shoulder to find the black van parked right in the center of an intersection and without as many people around as there were before, I don’t hesitate. I flip open the old phone and press call, watching as not even a second later, the van blows into a million pieces.

People scream and start to run as I look back the way that I was going and keep walking, knowing without a doubt that Paris would have already bailed, but now she knows just how damn serious I was. Though whether she took Ember with her or not still remains a mystery, but for now, my only priority is getting my ass home.
