Her innocent expression was just a tad bit too innocent for his liking.
“His nose bled like a geyser.” Siren made no attempt to hide her laughter. “Jesus had to drive him to the ER.”
Arden grimaced. “I feel terrible.”
“I can tell.” He wasn’t buying that bullshit for a hot second.
At his narrow-eyed stare, her hand went to pat her hair in a failed attempt to restore a bun that had given up trying to hang on.
“Wow. Look at the time. I need to hit the road, or I’ll be late for my shift at Mama’s.”
Doom noticed the high flag of red on her cheeks as Arden gave Siren a bright smile.
“Thank you again for all your help today. I hope just because you won’t be working here anymore after today, doesn’t mean you won’t still stop by to see me.”
“Hon, wild horses couldn’t keep me away.”
“Good, then I guess I’ll be seeing you soon,” Arden said enthusiastically before switching her gaze to him. “I’ll make sure I’m on time again in the morning. Have a great night,” she said less enthusiastically.
After he balefully watched her scurry from behind the counter to the front door, he turned back to Siren, who had a sudden interest in wiping down the bar. “What really happened?” he asked curtly.
Siren paused mid-wipe. “Let’s put it this way… Legion’s record is broken.”
He clenched his jaw, and any amusement Siren felt evaporated.
“He was helping her down by putting his hand on her ass to steady her, and her elbow caught him.”
“Deliberately?”
Siren reluctantly nodded her head. “Pretty sure.”
Doom slid his empty bottle forward. “Give me another one.”
Siren reached into the cooler. “What you going to do?”
“Nothing. I’ll tell Wizard. The punishment will be his to determine.” Doom grabbed the bottle Siren handed him and quickly took a drink. “Where is everyone? The place is dead.”
Usually, on a Saturday, the club was hopping, with the brothers blowing off steam and the women aiding on the blowing.
“The brothers are out running around with Hawk. He’s picking out a new bike. The women don’t think I know, but they’re out getting me a cake.”
Doom didn’t miss the sheen of tears in her eyes. “You can always change your mind.”
“Nah, I’m good. I’m ready to settle down and become a one-man woman. At least until Vandal wants us to come to a party on Fridays.”
Doom snorted. “I don’t see that happening anytime soon. Vandal has been trying to get you to marry him for a while.”
“He’ll get bored, and when he does, we can come out to play.”
“I wouldn’t count on it.”
Siren gave him the sultry smile she was known for. “You going to miss me?”
“You know it.”
She made a face at him. “You’re lying, but thanks for making the effort.” She went back to wiping down the counter. “I like the new girl,” she said offhandedly.
“She won’t last.”
Siren shook her head. “I think Arden will surprise you. She’s got a hell of a backbone.” She braced her elbow on the bar. “The girl is a worker. She went to the refrigerator to get some milk for her coffee, and instead of saying how disgusting it was, she cleaned it. When she noticed the bar lights weren’t working, she didn’t stop until she found the reason.”
“She was telling me the fuse box is overloaded,” Puck piped into the conversation. “She warned me that I should tell Wizard the wiring is for shit, and he needs to hire an electrician to install a bigger box able to handle the load we’re putting on it. She said don’t use the lights while we’re using the microwave. Even made a note to go on the microwave in case we forgot to tell the other members. She said we’re one nuke away from a catastrophe.”
Doom frowned. He would call an electrician himself on Monday. He didn’t want to chance a fire with any of the brothers or women sleeping out back.
Siren gave a moue of disgust. “When she went to the women’s restroom, she came back out with brighter lightbulbs and cleaning supplies. Cleaned the whole room from top to bottom then ran to the convenience store and came back with air fresheners. I felt like royalty when I went to take a piss.”
“She wasn’t hired to clean the bathrooms or fix shit.”
Sounded to him like the cagey woman was using every opportunity to keep from interacting with the brothers. While the bar workers were working, they weren’t expected to get up close and personal with the brothers, yet she could have used the opportunity to get more comfortable with them. The actress had no intention of earning any votes like the rest of the women did. She was biding time until Blue didn’t need their protection.
His nickname might only have four letters, but he was smart enough to recognize a con when he saw one. She might have gotten away with it today, but tomorrow was going to be a helluva different story.
