Still, her dad might start thinking that I’m not holding up my end of our bargain. I promised to protect her. Since I put my ring on her finger she’s been stabbed, dropped on the ground, almost blown to shit and now this.
If Mandy fucks up my shit she’s going to die very badly. I power walked off the elevator with my heart beating me to death. “Dad?”
“Jace? What is it son?” He stood from his chair behind the desk and I collapsed in one in front of it.
“What happened to you?” He was around the desk in a flash and for some reason his reaction made me laugh. Hadn’t I said those same words to Sian just a few hours ago? In pretty much the same tone?
“I think Sian’s pregnant.” His face was comical. First joy, then indecision, then back to joy. “And, how do you feel about that? You know son, these things happen when you have unprotected…”
My father spent the next five minutes expounding on the virtues of having kids young. He went back into our family history to prove to me why it was okay and even brought up some modern day examples of people who made it work.
“Dad, I’m not upset, I’m just…with everything that’s going on, how do I keep them safe?”
“Don’t worry about it, I’ve got it from here. You just go to the island and let her relax. Your mom and mother in law have already made a pretty good dent in the wedding plans. As to the other, like I said, I’ve got it.”
“I promised her dad that she’d finish school, that her life wouldn’t be hindered by marrying me so young.” Fuck-fuck-fuck. Now he’s going to think that I screwed up his kid’s life.
And what about her? While all her friends are going off doing their own thing….hold it. Is this the beginning you want for your son? This pessimistic bullshit? What’s done is done, deal with that shit the right way.
“What just happened?”
“Huh?” I looked at him questioningly.
“You came in here in a panic. Looked like you were about to pass out, but now that cloudy look has gone from your face.”
“I think I’m having a baby dad, shit what am I going to do with a son?” I got to my feet and paced his study as my mind took a glance into the future.
“The guys and I will spend a lot of time with him, I won’t let Sian do it alone. And I’m definitely not leaving her here and going off to college.”
I would buy her the damn diploma but I know she wouldn’t like that. Neither would I, we both like getting shit done on our own merit. “A son!” I rubbed my hand over my heart. Dad cleared his throat and brought my attention back to him.
“You know, you could have a daughter.”
“Dad, bite your tongue. We don’t have daughters remember? Four generations of sons, and only one for each family going back how many years?”
I was pretty confident about that shit. That’s why I knew Sian’s ass couldn’t bring in a ringer. “Shit, I gotta go get her a snack.”
“Already? She has cravings?”
“I’m not sure, she used that as an excuse to get me out of the room.”
“She didn’t exactly tell me that she’s pregnant, she let it slip and then backtracked but the deed was done. Oh, by the way, don’t tell mom yet okay.”
“Son, your fiancée fainted at school, the doctor gave no reason for her fainting spell. Your mother already knows or suspects.” Dammit!
I had another worry as I made my way downstairs. Sian was turning seventeen soon, would she see this as a mistake? Would she hate the baby? Want to get rid of it?
I almost threw up at the thought. Had she seemed distressed or upset? I tried to remember everything since we left the hospital. “Oh fuck!” I’d been so rough with her, had I hurt her? The baby? Maybe I should take her back to the doctor.
I forgot the chef and grabbed her a fruit plate and some juice, that’s all the hell she likes to snack on anyway. But I’d been away from her too long. I looked at my watch. Fifteen minutes?
I headed back upstairs with my hands full and eased open the door to my room. I put her stuff down on the dining table in the suite and walked over to where she’d fallen asleep on the bed.
She had both hands folded under her head as she slept on her side. I stood there, I don’t know how long after brushing the hair back behind her ear. How does she sleep with that thing in her face?
She was out cold so I left her and went to the other side of my wing. I turned on the monitor as soon as I got there so I could see her in bed, then I hit rewind on an earlier segment.
