“That stuff is mine, you can’t…”

“Not the clothes my money bought and not the car you got for your birthday. Nothing that was bought with my money is to leave here or I’ll have you arrested.”

“Mom? Mom do something, I’m your daughter.” She turned her back on me and went to stand beside him.

“Leave before I have you escorted off my property. And in case you’re wondering, this is for you almost killing my son. Now get out.”

I felt my world imploding around me as my last hope was dashed. All this time I thought I had him eating out of my hand he was playing me? How? What is going on?

I stumbled from the room and headed towards the stairs. They were blocked, by the servants who looked only too pleased by this turn of events. One of them, I’m not sure who, took my arm and dragged me towards the door.

I didn’t realize what was happening until I found myself standing outside with a closed door in my face. I heard the lock turn and my stomach fell to the ground. I started pounding on the door, screaming, but no one answered.

Fear rose up inside me like a tidal wave and I could taste its bitterness in my mouth. Why is this happening? How could everything go wrong all at once? Was someone out to get me?

I looked around in agitation and felt my mind begin to splinter. No, no way. I won’t just give up like this. I still had… I looked down at the phone I’d grabbed after the bitch walked into the study. I can’t let this out of my sight, it’s all I have left.

Those men don’t know that my world had changed. How could they? And though I prefer cash in hand, this phone and the contacts inside, which was just as good as my little black book, was almost as good as having that cash.

I got to my feet from the ground that I hadn’t been aware I’d slumped down onto. All was not lost. I remembered my secret entrance and headed there now.

No matter what he said, my jewelry was mine and would go for a nice sum, something to tide me over until I can get things straightened out at the bank.

My heart sank and I came up short when I found that the hedge had been filled in with that razor sharp wire. There was an envelope pinned there with my name scrawled across the front of it. My hand trembled as I reached out to take it.

They even knew about my secret entrance? What else did they know? Inside the envelope were five crisp one hundred dollar bills. “Is this it? Is this what you brought me into this world for?” I knew it was from the bitch. But if she thought that this was going to be enough to save her from my wrath later on she was sorely mistaken.

“I’ve paid more for meals you worthless bitch. I should’ve killed your brat when I had the chance.” I screamed until my lungs hurt but there was nothing from inside. I don’t even know if they heard me.

I tried finding another space in the hedge, wide enough to squeeze through, but it was all closed off as expected. I walked around the house and endured one last final insult. The sprinklers came on, drenching me and it was the last straw.

I ran out of the line of the cold water and ended up on the driveway. I was afraid to leave the premises as ordered. Afraid that if I took that step, that it would really be over.

How had I come to this? Homeless? Me? And why is it that when this shit happened I’m at my worst? Who can I get to even look at me looking like this?

I clenched the wet bills in my hand and looked back at the house one last time before walking away. “I’ll be back.”

I brushed the tears away from my cheeks as I headed down the driveway. I needed to get high in the worst way. Once I do that I’ll be able to think.

JACE

“Sian, the plane can carry up to twenty pieces of luggage in the outside compartment and a few more inside. Where pray tell are you planning to put those rugs?” She’d fallen in love with two things in Istanbul, the blue pottery from Izmir, and the damn Persian rugs.

“But Jace they’re so pretty, can’t we add them to your…I mean, our bedroom?” She batted her damn lashes at me like she’s been doing for the last few hours since we woke up and left the hotel.

Little did she know that it wasn’t her damn eye shit that was making me fold, but the fact that it was the mother of my child asking these things of me.
