“Don’t you think that’s a little … private?” Robin asked, speaking softly.
Elizabeth tutted. “Trust me, I know it’s private but I have a particular investment in those houses.”
“Oh, you want to buy those houses? I don’t know if we’re going to be selling.” Had Dylan shown an interest in selling to this woman?
Elizabeth tutted and waved her hand in the air. “No, I have no interest in buying those houses. I’m interested in the couples they create.”
“The couples they create?” Robin wondered if it would be rude for her to pinch her own flesh to see if she would wake up. This had to be a crazy dream.
“I’m curious,” Elizabeth said. “Has there been something strange going on? I don’t know, something you can’t quite understand, or why it happened? One moment you went from ignoring your neighbor to living with him, so I’m going to say yes. And now, you find yourself loving every moment you’re with him, and you don’t want to be without him?”
Robin opened her mouth and closed it. The damage caused by a basic kitchen fitting was strange, because it shouldn’t have caused any issue. Also, the builder not being available, prolonging the time she and Dylan stayed together.
“That’s just a coincidence.”
“Well, sweet girl, I’m about to tell you something that might blow your mind.”

The moment Dylan was finished with the call with his lawyer, he made his way toward Robin. He’d noticed the car was parked earlier that day, with the same three people he’d seen there most days. He was going to have to call the police, because he was starting to get real “stalker” feelings from them.
His lawyer had called him with a warning. His ex-wife had broken off with his ex-best friend, and had tried to contact him through her own lawyer. She was trying to find ways of showing his ineptitude as a husband, in a way of getting money out of him.
After breaking it off with his ex-best friend, she didn’t have a single cent, and no one was giving her the time of day. He knew it was because he’d given her the boot, left that life, and had stopped doing any kind of business with anyone associated with her or his ex-best friend. They had fucked him royally, but he didn’t care.
Arriving at the field, he made his way toward Robin. Seeing her calmed his nerves, and he moved in behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and pressing kisses to her neck.
“Hello, beautiful.”
“Dylan,” she said, giving a light laugh and sinking back against him. “You startled me.”
“I didn’t mean to.”
“How did your call go?” Robin asked.
“Fine. My lawyer was giving me the alert that my ex-wife is trying to find ways and means of getting money out of me.” He shrugged. “It would seem karma has found a way to bite her in the ass.” He pressed kisses against her neck, wishing they were back home already, so he could take her clothes off and make love to every inch of her body. He couldn’t get enough of her. She drove him crazy with need.
“Dylan,” she said.
“Yes.” He looked past her shoulder and watched as Buttercup started to chase her tail.
“Have you heard anything crazy about our homes?” Robin asked.
It was such an odd question, but he scrambled his brain trying to figure something out. “Nah, can’t say I have.”
“Did you look into any of the history?”
He shook his head. “I was looking for a place to just relax and gather my stuff together, and I don’t know, to be away from the city. I didn’t look into the history. What’s going on?”
“This is so crazy.”
“Tell me.”
He let her go and Robin turned. Dylan couldn’t help but reach out to her, taking her hand, locking their fingers together.
“You know those people that stand by that car and are always looking at us?” Robin asked.
“Er, yeah. I didn’t realize you noticed them.”
“It’s kind of hard not to when they’re always staring at us.” She gave a light laugh. “Ugh, I just spoke with one of them, Elizabeth, and what she said has … I mean, it can’t be true, right? Houses are inanimate objects. They’re created by men and women, of course, but no, it can’t be true.”
He didn’t like the confused look on her face. Cupping her face, he tilted her head back. “Talk to me.”
“It’s insane.”
“Do I look like I care what it is?”
There was a pause and she licked her lips. “Our houses are cursed.”
Of all the things he thought she could have said, this wasn’t one of them.
“Our houses are cursed.” He tried to contain his laughter.
“Don’t, okay? Don’t laugh or mock. I know how stupid this all sounds. Trust me, I do.”
“Fine. I’ll try not to laugh.”
“You’re smiling.”
“But I’m not laughing.”
“Dylan, this isn’t funny. If you knew what I knew, you wouldn’t be laughing.”
