What was it that Skittles once said? Pit and I have a lot more in common than we think. I know Blake isn’t innocent and will destroy someone for fucking with him, but can I do this and not become that guy?
I guess we’re all going to find out.
“Looks like you have a partner, Ac,” I say with a smile.
“Joshua, I think it’s understood without saying, this is one of those things—”
“I’ll keep it to my chest. This one is family only. Point me where you need me, when you need me and I’m there. You guys and Pappoús are the only family I have left that I trust.”
Zoe looks at me sadly. “I know the first place you and I need to go. Blake is right. You need to remember.”
I sit with my brows knitted, but her words carry a sense of truth. I’m so tired of being lost and angry. I’m going to trust them to help me help myself.
Shawna
Ugh, why won’t that phone stop ringing? Where the heck is Ven? That’s her phone, not mine.
I crack an eye open to find her hanging off the couch with drool running out of her mouth. I stifle a laugh and shake my head. I guess we did party pretty hard the other night, and she stayed up for as long as she could, waiting for a call from Joshua.
I feel bad that he never called. She’s worried about him. I’m learning just how much the guys mean to her. She has a thing for Pit, but Josh and the others are like brothers to her.
I know my cousin. She’d do anything for them. It’s one of the things that makes it hard not to love her.
Ven doesn’t do things for you to give her anything back. She does it because she loves to help.
“All right already,” I groan and move to pick up her phone. I grab it from the coffee table to see it’s Joshua calling.
I smile as the name Kelex flashes across the screen. I was so disappointed when he never showed up to his own party. I had asked Ven to spend the weekend with her, thinking he might turn up there.
I can’t wait to meet him in person. Knowing Ven has been waiting on his call, I answer before it goes to voice mail. I would hate for them to keep missing each other—at least, that’s what I tell myself as I answer her phone.
“Hello.”
“Hey, gorgeous. What are you doing answering Skittles’s phone?”
I try not to gasp. I didn’t think he would know it was me without me telling him. My face hurts from smiling so hard.
“She’s knocked out. We had some drinks. I don’t think she’s going to answer anyone for a few hours.”
He laughs. “She does sleep like the dead after a night of drinking.”
“I know, right?” I laugh back. “Do you want me to tell her anything when she wakes?”
“No. I’ll catch up to her. How have you been?” he asks smoothly.
“I’m good. Looking for a full-time job.”
“You’re a photographer, right?”
“Yeah.”
“I could give you some numbers.”
“I don’t do a lot of fashion stuff. I want to do some photojournalism, maybe some documentary stuff.”
“Ah, I’ve got you. I’ll still pass along some numbers and you can see what comes up. How about that?”
“That would be awesome. If I don’t figure it out soon, I’ll be following my mom around for her campaign. So far from what I want.”
“I hear you do some pretty impressive work. I’m sure you’ll land something soon. How’s the dating going?”
I bite my lip and shake my head as if he can see me. “That date was a total bust.”
“Really? What happened?”
“He was shier than me. Can you believe he was texting me while he sat right across from me?”
“Wow,” he scoffs.
“How are things with you? Did you enjoy your trip to Greece?”
“I did. I got to spend time with my grandfather. He always keeps me grounded. I wish I could head back there now.”
“I hear it’s gorgeous. I’d love to go with my camera. I’d people-watch through my lens,” I gush before I can stop myself.
“So no fashion photography, but you’re not against taking pictures of people. Got it. I’ll take you and your camera to Crete someday,” he says in his sexy voice.
“Really?”
“Of course, why not?”
“I don’t know. You don’t know me.”
“I know I like talking to you. Every time you answer Ven’s phone, you’re on the other side of a shit day. Taking you home would be like a thank-you for being you.
“Besides, we’re going to get to know each other. This is my number. Save it to your phone. I’m your new person. Call when you need me.”
“Are you joking?”
“No, why would I joke?”
I bite my lip again. “Ven says you guys joke a lot. I don’t know. I wasn’t expecting you to want to talk to me.”
