“I don’t know. I thought maybe if I came here, then he wouldn’t follow. Or her. I mean . . . it could be a woman, I guess. But stalkers are mostly men, right?”
“I think we’d have to look up the statistics on that,” Emme said. “But I’m gonna go with yes. If we classify this as stalker behavior. I mean . . . he’s only doing nice things, right?”
“Yes, but what if something triggers him into taking another step,” Reyes said tiredly. “I think we should rule out the Fox completely first.”
Duke groaned. “Fuck it. Fine. Let’s call him.”
Sunny drew out her phone and turned it onto speaker as it rang.
“Hello, sweet girl,” a man said cheerily through the phone.
Well. He didn’t sound too crazy. Or like a stalker at all. Greer started to relax.
“Fox, you’re on speaker,” Sunny said.
“Who is in the room?”
“Duke, Reyes, Hack, Emme, Spike, and Greer.”
“Greer? Sav’s sister?”
“Yes. We told her a bit about you. But she knows to keep quiet.”
“Good,” he replied. “Did you warn her what happens if she doesn’t?”
She gulped.
“Do not threaten my girl, Fox,” Hack snapped.
Holy. Shit. Was that wise? If he was some sort of insane assassin?
“Claimed her, have you? Well, that’s different,” the Fox said. There was a low moaning noise in the background. “That was quick. Always knew you were the type. Now you won’t have to slap the salami so much, huh?”
“The type to what?” Hack asked.
“Fall fast and hard. I did that with my babies too.”
His babies? Was he talking about actual babies? She was so confused.
“You sound like you’re in a good mood tonight,” Sunny said cautiously. “Everything good?”
“Of course it is, sweet girl. I’m in a good mood because I’m engaging in one of my favorite activities.”
Sunny was wide-eyed. “Um, you’re playing with Brody and Autumn?”
The Fox chuckled. “No, that’s a very different activity from what I’m doing right now. I’ve got someone here who was being rather naughty, and I’ve decided he needs to be taught a lesson. No one messes with one of my babies and gets away with it.”
“Someone messed with Brody or Autumn?” Sunny asked.
“Hmm. Someone thought it was all right to yell at my boy. He’s going to regret that.”
“I bet,” Sunny whispered.
Holy heck. This guy was completely nuts.
“Now, I’m sure you didn’t call to chitchat with me about my fun and games. What’s going on? Did Duke finally decide what sort of campervan he wants to rent? I’m going to tell you right now, he needs to be more decisive. It’s embarrassing how much I have to do for him.”
Duke was going slowly red. And, oh look, he had a tic by his eye too. She wondered if he called it the Fox.
“Um no, this isn’t about that. I have a couple of things . . . do you have time?” Sunny asked.
“Always got time for you, sweet girl. My friend will wait. Won’t you, friend? Just don’t bleed out on me until we’ve had some more playtime.”
“Holy shit,” she whispered.
Hack squeezed her tight. “Just remember, you cannot tell anyone about him. It will be dangerous. For both of us.”
She nodded shakily. She got it. Don’t speak about the big bad wolf. Urgh, Fox.
“Do you know much about the rumors that Dante Diaz is thinking about making moves in Billings?” Reyes demanded.
“Hmm. Nope. I’ve heard about it, but I’m not really interested in gossip. Next question.”
“The Rykers got into it with some of our guys tonight, Fox,” Reyes snapped. “One of them was badly injured and some of them brought him back to Reaper’s in the trunk of their car. There was a fucking brawl out front.”
“Was my sweet girl there at the time?” the Fox asked sharply.
“No, I was at work,” Sunny said. “We came later.”
“Then why would I care? Except, Sunny, you’re not to go near Reaper’s anymore. Duke, take her home. And you best protect her well. Understand me?”
Whoa. That was a deadly threat if ever she heard one. But Duke just looked more furious if that was possible.
“I always protect Sunny.”
“Then why the fuck did you take her to a brawl?” the Fox asked.
“I didn’t take her to a brawl . . . I came to check on my friends.”
“Then you should have left Sunny somewhere safe. You’re always welcome to come live with us, sweet girl,” the Fox said slyly.
Was he in love with Sunny?
Sunny just shook her head with a smile. “You know I’d never leave Duke. I love him.”
“Hmm. Love does work in mysterious ways.”
“Sunny could easily have been here, though,” Reyes pointed out. “Or one of the other girls.”
“Then make sure they aren’t.”
“Fox, we just need to know if Diaz is planning on bringing his drugs and guns to Billings,” Duke said. “I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that it won’t be good for the city.”
