“Aw, little dude, don’t repeat Daddy’s bad words,” Ant groans. “Sorry about that, baby, but I mean what I said. I’m taking you home.”
“I packed for you,” Ven sings. “Let’s go. We’re eating at my house tonight.”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, calm down, half-pint. The man wants to take his wife home first,” Pit chuckles.
“Oh, okay. Yeah, that makes sense. We’re still good for that nail appointment though, right?” Ven says hopefully.
“Yeah. Looks like we are.”
“Hold on. You’re still feeding me at your place tonight, right?” Tak says.
“I guess we could fire up the grill,” Ven says teasingly.
“We paid a babysitter for this,” Tak grumbles.
“Shit, we trusted a babysitter. Get over it,” Deacon says.
“I was promised beer,” Luke mumbles.
“Would you all shut the fuck up? I’ve got beer and steaks at the house. Ox and his lady are just going to spend the night at their place. No one said anything about canceling the night,” Pit says. “Damn, y’all be working my last nerve.”
“Shit. Fuck. Damn,” AJ says happily.
“No, those aren’t good words, buddy. Don’t repeat after Deacon or Uncle Pit either.”
“Uncle Deacon, kid. You call me Uncle Deacon.”
Ant looks over at Deacon with a little bit of surprise on his face. I smile. I’ve loved watching them pull him deeper into their group.
From the pictures, I’ve always thought he was closer to them. I only learned otherwise in person over the last three weeks. I’m suddenly excited to get back to Vander.
I’ve noticed they are welcoming me and my son in as well. I’ve been alone for so long, I need this. As if reading my mind, Ven rushes over and pulls me into a hug. Next thing I know, I’m surrounded in a group hug by all the ladies.
“My family,” Ven coos.
They give me a tight squeeze before releasing me. I’m smiling so hard my face hurts. However, when Ant comes up behind me and wraps his arm around me as Leo and Pit walk by with our suitcases, I feel tingles all over.
“You ready?” He dips down to say in my ear.
“Babe, I’ve been ready for thirteen years. Take us home,” I choke out.
He reaches under my chin and tilts my head back. I moan into his mouth as he delivers a searing kiss. And then AJ decides he wants our attention. He palms the side of Ant’s face and tugs us apart.
“AJ want to go for ride in loud car,” he whimpers.
“Says the little guy who will be asleep before we pull out of the driveway. Come on, let’s get you in the car.”
“Anthony, Mr. Blake would like us to escort you into the city,” Odell says.
“If you guys can keep up, be my guest.” Ant shrugs and places a hand on my back to lead me to the car.
He’s dripping with the confidence I know him for. This is the man I fell in love with. I snuggle into his side as he holds AJ and we get to the car.
“Thank you,” I say as he opens my door for me to get in.
He whispers in AJ’s ear. I look up after getting into the car. AJ gives me a big smile. “You’re welcome, Mommy. Buckle up.”
I burst into laughter. “Aw, baby. Thank you.”
He gives me a sweet smile before looking at his father proudly. Ant gives him a high-five then closes the door and walks around the car to get AJ inside.
After, he climbs in behind the wheel. Starting the car, he then turns to me and cups the back of my neck to pull me into a passionate kiss. The other engines rev, breaking us apart.
I pull away with a goofy smile on my lips. The look in my husband’s eyes speaks a thousand words. We need to get home now.
Pit and Skittles are the first to pull out. Luke and Tak follow as Kid falls in line in front of Deacon. We bring up the rear with Odell and John-John following behind us in the SUV and Ven’s car.
We’re definitely making a lot of noise. Vander, here the Knights come. My husband is taking me home.
Chapter 44
Welcome, Baby
Ox
The amount of sexual tension in the car while we drove into Vander was enough to choke me. My house is right between Vander and Bridge Lake. I’m on the border of the city.
Everyone else has moved farther into Bridge Lake, so they made the trip to my house before heading to Pit and Skittles’s. Leo and Pit brought our things in as I carried a sleeping AJ into the house and to his new room.
This will be the first time he gets to sleep in the race car bed I bought for him. I didn’t know he was mine when I bought it, but as I placed him in his bed, it felt right. This is where he belongs.
