One thing is for sure. Uncle Blake is right about everyone in Vander and Bridge Lake being tied to each other. I need to untangle the web in my head so I can see where all this fits, but I have a headache and none of my thoughts will connect.
I still don’t get how this connects Lex or me to the assholes and that race. Every time I try to connect the dots, it slips away as my head hammers.
“We’re so pitiful. The first time we’ve had a full night without our son and we can’t see straight to make the best of it,” Lex sighs as she lies across my chest.
I snort. She’s right. We’re both still fully dressed and exhausted from life.
She looks great tonight. That dress is killer, but I know she’s worried about Kid. To be honest, I’ve been a bit concerned too.
This isn’t like her. I may not have forgiven her, but I don’t want to find out anything has happened to her.
I reach to rub some of the tension out of Lex’s shoulders as my thoughts buck against each other. I need a good night’s sleep and then I’ll be able to sort shit out.
“Want me to undress you?” I offer.
“I was going to ask you the same thing.”
She sits up and tugs her dress up to straddle my waist. I look up at her face. It hits me that we can finally truly move on. Seth Grayson being her ex isn’t a big deal. At least it’s nothing like what I thought she was hiding.
To be truthful. I once told her I didn’t need to know his name because he wasn’t me and he wasn’t coming back. I had no idea the dude was going to jail and would die there.
“Ant,” Lex calls as she gets my shirt unbuttoned and smooths her hands across my abs. She leans in to kiss my chest and looks up at me through my lashes.
“Yeah, baby.”
“I just want to get out of my head. Can you make love to me?”
Her words are all the aspirin I need. I look into her honey-colored eyes and forget the world outside. We can deal with all of that tomorrow.
“Come here, baby. I’ve got you.”
Chapter 52
Where It Began
Alexis
The windows and repairs were done faster than we thought. Pit knows how to get shit done. I’ll never question the man again.
I was surprised to see Leo when he showed up to babysit. Although AJ seemed to be excited. Leo did a great job of distracting him as we left out of the house.
I had no clue we were going out. Ant just grabbed me and handed me my hoodie, then told me to get into the truck. Now here we sit up at our cliff. I have so many memories of this place.
I used to think of it often when I first got to New York, with its crowded sidewalks and nosy streets. I was so homesick back then. Most of all, I missed Ant, he was my home.
“What’s this about?” I say with a smile on my lips.
“I thought we could use a minute to ourselves. Besides, this is the perfect place for what I have in mind.”
“And what’s that?”
He smiles and changes the song. He’s been playing a really nice one by Ryan Leslie, “I Choose You.” I look at the screen to see the new song playing, “Every Little Detail” by Forest Blakk. He rolls the windows down as I listen. My smile widens as he opens his door.
“Come dance with me.”
I get out and meet him in front of the truck as the headlights light up the night for us. He takes me into his arms and brings me close. It’s a little chilly up here, but his strong arms are keeping me warm.
He sways us to the song. I place my head on his chest and soak in his presence. I get lost in thought. Ant is such a complex person. He can do sweet things like this and all the cute dates, but at the drop of a dime, I know he can be cruel and calculated.
I haven’t seen that cruel side directed at me since the night of Pit’s birthday. I’m still so grateful to the crew. I snuggle in close and thank God for my blessings.
“This song is perfect for what I want to say,” he murmurs.
I smile. I’ve been listening to the lyrics. It’s a great song. It repeats and I listen more closely.
I pull back and look up into his eyes when the hook starts. I can see that love there. My heart pangs. I’ve noticed he doesn’t say the words as often as he used to.
This means a lot. I look down as my lashes become wet. He drops to one knee and the tears begin to really fall.
