Ralen started swearing quietly.
“Oh, Duke and I are much closer than friends. Aren’t we, Duke?”
“Dear Lord,” Duke muttered.
Hack squeezed Greer harder, as though he might protect her better. She squeaked in pain.
“Shit, sorry, baby.”
“Easy there, Doc,” the Fox said. “You’re meant to heal, not harm.” He shot her a cursory glance, but then looked over at the others. Hack breathed out a sigh of relief. He’d had the Fox in his house once before. He’d really hoped that would be the only time.
“You don’t look how I imagined,” Cash said.
Jesus. Did he not know when to shut up?
Ralen elbowed Cash. “He’s the master of disguise, remember? This isn’t his real face.”
“This one is smarter than he looks. Now, explain this to me again. You think the Devil was running some drug ring and using the Devil’s Kingdom as well as other gangs across the US to distribute the drugs? Then he killed an FBI agent he probably had in his pocket, thinking he was working with a rat? The same rat that Matthew Jorgen was trying to find when he tortured and killed that poor man before raping and beating Greer?”
“Sounds like you already have the gist of it,” Sav said, crossing his arms over his chest.
“Did you know what the Devil was doing?” Duke asked. “That he spared Cash and Ralen, but made them leave?”
“Explain what you saw,” the Fox said to Cash and Ralen. They went over everything again.
Hack hadn’t seen the Fox this serious before.
“Fuck,” the Fox said.
“You didn’t know, did you?” Hack said.
“The Devil moved in his own ways. He’s been . . . gone for a long time. Don’t know why he spared you both. Unless he saw you as children. The Devil doesn’t harm children. But he also wouldn’t want to risk you both running your mouths. You’re lucky you left.” He muttered something to himself. “So you’re telling me that Dante Diaz’s pet fucking killer has been running around my city?”
“Billings is your city now?” Duke asked dryly.
“It is if there’s another assassin moving in.” The Fox shot Duke a sly look. “Although, if I moved my sweet girl into my den, then I could take care of her and ignore the rest of you and your annoying problems.”
Duke glared at the Fox.
“Sorry we’re such a hassle,” Hack said. “You don’t have to help us.” He set Greer on the sofa, placing a pillow behind her. Luckily, she didn’t have any cracked or broken ribs but she was severely bruised. He pulled a blanket off the back of the couch and tucked it around her, before turning to the Fox.
“But if I don’t help you, you’ll all blunder about and your women will get into trouble, and then I’ll have to rescue them. That’s what always happens.” The Fox sighed dramatically. “That’s the problem with being the best. Everyone wants something from you.”
Dear Lord.
How did this man’s head not roll off his neck?
“I thought you’d be in a better mood now that you have someone to fuss over and boss around,” the Fox said to him. “What’s wrong? You not getting any? Still having to wank the worm? Cool the cucumber? Sizzle the dizzle?”
“What the fuck does that mean?” Ralen asked.
“Just wondering if Hack here is in a bad mood because he’s not getting his end away,” the Fox said.
“That’s my sister you’re talking about,” Cash said.
“Really struggling to understand why the Devil let you two live.” The Fox eyed them up.
Sav stepped in front of them protectively. “They’re young, and they don’t know you well.”
“But they’re here, and they work for Dante Diaz. I don’t think I like him or want his men here. They’ll only bring problems with them. Like Ortega Diaz.”
“Ortega isn’t here,” Ralen said. “He’s in New York.”
“That so? Well, he better be. Because he doesn’t want me to come hunting for him.”
Both Cash and Ralen bristled at that. Fuck, if someone didn’t do something, blood was going to line his walls.
“I gotta pee,” Greer said suddenly.
And somehow, it broke the tension in the room.
“Let’s get you to the bathroom,” he said. “Then into bed.”
Duke ran his hand over his face. “Will you help us figure this out, Fox?”
The Fox looked thoughtful. “I’ll help. If this guy betrayed the Devil, then it’s up to me to exact revenge. And without me to clean up all your messes, you really would be lost.”

“Daddy! Daddy!” she yelled out.
Panic tightened her chest. Where was he? Why wasn’t he here? She stumbled out of bed, searching for him. Her body throbbed, reminding her of every bruise she had.
Two days had passed since she’d been attacked and if anything, her body felt worse, her muscles were aching, and her voice was hoarse because that asshole had tried to strangle her.
At least she was able to open her bruised eye now.
