I sighed, glancing in my rearview to switch lanes. “I wanted to tell you, but I didn’t know if I was going to do it. And I didn’t want you trying to persuade me one way or another. The decision has to be mine so that you don’t feel responsible if anything happens and I get in trouble.”

“Sarah, this is so wrong but so romantic. And I’m jealous!” She pinched my arm. “You’re such a hog. You can’t have all the good guys. If you don’t want Matt, can I have him?”

“Well,” I cringed and shrugged. “He’s unofficially available.”

Her eyes bugged out. “What?”

I nodded. “We parked in our spot to have sex, but I felt way too guilty, and the next thing I knew, we were breaking up.”

“So he knows about Isaac?”

“No. Oh my gosh, totally not. We’re not saying anything to anyone until we absolutely have to.” I deflated. “I hate this. Why do my family and his have to be so intertwined? I just want to be friends with Matt. And I don’t want our families to get upset. And I want my parents to have the money to buy their own place so that I don’t feel like I have to marry Matt for some greater good.”

“Why does it have to be Matt? Isaac is a Cory too. Maybe Mr. Cory would be fine with you just swapping sons.”

“Stop,” I snorted. “You know that’s not how anyone will look at this. Whatever good graces Isaac has fallen into with his dad will be destroyed. Wesley will probably make him reenlist. And I’ll be forced to marry Matt, pop out babies, and raise chickens.”

Heather pulled down the visor to look into the mirror and apply her pink lipstick. “Whatever. I can’t believe you’re choosing a guy over your best friend. Are you going to have sex with him?”

I stiffened. It’s not that I hadn’t thought about it. After all, he said we’d be sharing a motel room. I even liked to think about Isaac in a sexual way. But actual intercourse would ruin everything because sex was a scam or an acquired taste. It made sense. All parents complained about the difficulties of parenting. Surely God wouldn’t make procreation so easy. Making a human needed to be hard, like trigonometry, pull-ups, and brain surgery.

“I’d rather not,” I mumbled.

“Sarah, Isaac is not taking you to Nashville to watch you give yourself an orgasm.”

I blushed. “He’s taking me to Nashville because he knows it’s my dream.”

She laughed. “Don’t be that naive.”

I pulled into the bowling alley parking lot. “If it were only about sex, I don’t think he’d take me to Nashville just for that.”

“I’m not saying he doesn’t really like you. I’m just saying you can’t risk so much without going into this with your eyes open. He’s going to expect sex. And I bet he’s good at it.”

I snorted, shaking my head as I stopped the car and killed the engine. “There’s nothing wrong with Matt. He’s sexy. And hot. And a nice guy. It’s me, not him.”

“Duh. I’m not saying anything is wrong with Matt. He just doesn’t have experience like Isaac does. Just imagine how much sex Isaac has had?” Heather smirked. “I bet he’s totally done all kinds of sex.”

“Stop!” I unbuckled and covered my red face.

We got out of the car and headed into the bowling alley. Heather looped her arm with mine as we laughed and stumbled like we were drunk.

“Did you ever think you’d do it with brothers?” she asked.

I couldn’t stop giggling. “That sounds bad, like I’m doing it with both of them at the same time.”

“A threesome.” She gasped. “Would you ever do that?”

“No!” I released her arm and playfully shoved her just as we reached the entrance. “Listen. You can’t tell anyone. I mean, anyone about any of this,” I said, stopping before she opened the door.

“What am I supposed to say when everyone else asks where you are?”

“Tell them I got sick.”

“Sarah,” she frowned, “it’s going to get out. Someone will say something, and it will get out to your parents because everyone will want to know if you’re feeling better.”

“Then tell them my dad changed his mind and didn’t want me to go.”

She sighed. “This won’t end well.”

I didn’t think so, either, but not going to the place I wanted to go more than anywhere else felt like a bigger tragedy. Yes, I knew if or when I got caught, I might change my feelings about that.

“I’ve got your back,” Heather said, opening the door for me.

“You’re awesome.”

“I know,” she giggled. “Just don’t get pregnant. You won’t be able to hide that. And I don’t think you’d get an abortion.”

She was right. I wouldn’t be able to hide it because I wouldn’t be able to get an abortion. Even if God forgave me, my father would disown me.
