She’d told me about her strict diet while modeling and the fact that she’d always watched what she ate in the years since because she hates exercise. I have a feeling that my kid is about to fuck that all up. I didn’t say shit though, as she dug into her first treat with gusto.

Gavin

After she ate herself into a coma and went up for her late afternoon nap, the guys and I headed to the study where we spoke in hushed tones for the next few hours as we went over my plan. “I need the word to spread that that’s where we’re going to be. Of course I don’t have to tell you that it needs to be done in a way that doesn’t raise his suspicions.”

“Part of the reason I wanted to see him today was to judge for myself just how far gone he really is. The man we saw today is nothing like the well-groomed snake oil salesman of the past. We only have a few days to put this into effect so let’s get moving.”

“There’s only one problem. How do you plan to keep uncle from getting involved?” I smirked at Kev’s question. “That’s easy. I’m sending my wife to him for the weekend.” They didn’t seem to think that would work, but I know him. As long as I word shit the right way he’d fall for it.

“So we’re good? Any holes?” Kev shook his head no while Dave still seemed deep in thought. Worrywart! His ass is always like this. He’d think the shit to death until he sees it from every angle. Meanwhile I don’t have that kind of time.

That night I stayed awake long into the early morning hours after she fell asleep, going over and over the plan in my head. All that’s left is my talk with dad and getting the word out. It’s simple really. I just have to spread the word that my wife and I would be spending the weekend at my place in the Hamptons.

Everyone knows how secluded this place is since there’ve been write-ups about it since I bought it a few years ago. It’s practically on a little islet on the island sound that can only be reached by a small boat. I’m giving the senator the perfect opportunity to come after us and seek his revenge.

I left the bed at first light knowing that she’d be down for a few hours yet and went into the home office to call dad. He answered like he too had been up all night. “Hello son!”

“Dad, I need a favor. I have some work to catch up on this weekend and I don’t want to leave Giselle alone. How about you and mom babysit your daughter in law and grandbaby for a few days?”

“Your mother would love that. It’s all I could do to keep her from descending on you two as soon as you came back.” Perfect! I’ll deal with the fallout once he learns that I’d conned him. We stayed on the phone a few minutes more before I hung up and went back to her.

Though she won’t be up for a while, if she rolls over and don’t see me she’d wake up and come looking for me. I climbed back in beside her and drew her gently into my arms. Soon it will all be over and there would be no threat hanging over your head. Nothing to take the smile from your eyes again.

I promised her that and so much more as she laid sleeping. I thought of all that she’d been through, all the things she’d shared that she hadn’t written down in her journal and though my heart ached for her, I was assured that the rest of her life would be much better, I’d see to it.

I moved my hand down to the flat of her tummy over my child and hoped that he or she would be born into this world free of fear. I thought of all the things I wanted for both mother and child. Could already imagine this little one and all the others to follow, happy, safe, loved.

Even with all that we’d faced there was nothing that could take away from the joy I felt at moments like this. I never once forget in the midst of all the turmoil how lucky I am to have her with me like this. I don’t think that there’d ever be a day when I don’t remember what we went through, what she went through, to get us here.

I kissed her forehead and she sighed my name in her sleep and got a little closer. I know I shouldn’t, that I should let her sleep. But I couldn’t resist turning to her and putting her beneath me. “Gavin!” Her sleep soft voice whispered in my ear.
